2008 BMW 328xi and the recommended oil for this model is 7 quarts of 5W-30 Castrol Synthetic oil and spend the 13.00 for the factory oil filter from the dealer. There have been ENDLESS hours of discussion on oil here on the forums, but when you get down to the Exact viscosity level, it really has a relevance based on how warm the weather was. I used to run a 20w-50 during the Summer months in my hot rod (1974 Z28) and 10W-40 in the winter which was a thinner viscosity oil. BMW runs a 5w-30 year round as it covers the viscosity levels for the heat rangers year round. They would also recommend a 0w-30 oil if I remember the specs from the BMW CD rom properly.

Also, people will talk about LL 0w-30 oils, that means LONG LASTING as BMW recommends an oil change every 14-15 k miles roughly, depending on driving habits and how on board computer handles the type of driving you do. I, and alot of the members on this site, like to use just a standard synthetic oil (5w-30, NO LL) and change our oil every 5-6 thousand miles. Honestly, if you make it a habit to check the autozone, pep boys or advance auto parts oil sales every week and keep an eye out for FULL SYNTHETIC, not a blend, NOT a conventional oil, you can average these quarts running 1-2 dollars a piece! I did 1.5 oil changes for FREE last year and there was a sales at Advance auto sale, which sold 5 quarts of the Name brand for $27.99 plus tax and the rebate was good for up to $30.00 and a limit of TWO purchases per household or I mailed on to my primary house and one to my apartment, I don't remember. Point was/is that IF YOU LOOK FOR SALES, you can get synthetic oil, which normally run 7-10 dollars PER QUART normally at a fraction of that cost if you shop for sales and do mail in rebates. If your local dealer charges too much for the OEM oil filter, try out www.getbmwparts.com but watch their shipping costs. You can also try www.rockauto.com as I believe they carry a FACTORY oil filter (which tends to be of a higher quality than after market filters) and if you are under Factory warranty or extended warranty, the first thing they will check if you have an engine related failure is what type of oil filter you use and if you have kept your own receipts for designated oil changes. Just write down the mileage and the date of the oil change on the oil filter receipt and keep it in a folder somewhere.
