Notably loud noise from under the hood at startup

Recently I have been hearing a noticeably loud whirring/humming noise from the engine at startup. It would go for a while and then die down after a few minutes and it doesn't sound good, as if something is working really hard. The RPMs do not correspond with the noise.

I noticed today that I had the AC/air on when I started the car and then I heard the noise, but after I turned the air off to get a better listen, the noise settled down. So I turned the air back on and the noise seemed to start up again.

Any ideas? Is this normal? Thanks a lot guys!
