Hi

The car is in the local BMW dealers for a service and they are also checking for an oil leak. Seems like it's the automatic gearbox.

I have been quoted £182 to change the gasket, but after ringing round some local indy's it seems like the sump plate could also be an issue once the 'box is stripped down. The dealer is telling me that they are confident that the gasket will solve the issue; however, two indy's seem reluctant to change just the gasket in the event that the sump plate has also warped.

I need the car tomorrow and will need to book it in again for the oil leak, so I have a couple of days to decide which route to take.

Any thoughts anyone?

i think i have the same problem as you. i have a leak from the auto gearbox and have been told the gasket needs changing. :s

If the sump pan is changed as well, the indy's quoted me just short of £400.

I have had another go at the dealer and he assures me that the gasket will solve the problem. The thing with a forum like this is that you just don't trust the dealers at all.

I've had this issue repaired twice under the BMW warranty. Seems to be a problem with the fluid leaking out through the gasket, not easily visible and doesn't leave tell tale damp spots under the car -- but can manifest itself in a "choking" type effect after slowing down and accelerating from a slow speed

My Indy wouldn't change just the gasket due to the reasons of warping previously mentioned. Apparently for my box (zf? 335d) they produce a kit with pan, gaskets, oil etc. I pondered getting someone else to change gasket but decided for peace of mind to go for it. Although mine quoted £400 but forgot to mention vat exclusive so nearly 500, but hey it's done! New oil gave smoother changes also.
