MPG

I know temps can be checked in the hidden menus but I don't remember how but any how. According to an online real mpg site it would seem I am getting less than 40mpg on my pre lci 320d even though the obc mpg is usually between 42 and 46. Should I consider getting the relevant thermostats changed. I usually stick £30 in and always get a minimum of 160 to 170 miles although as the light comes on at varying times as in anytime from 70 miles left I suppose there is a little bit in it but nowhere near enough I think for me to be averaging 40mpg. Mainly 30 zones and a little bit of B roads in my daily commute in very little traffic. Thoughts please.

I would check your coolant temps first before having unnecessary work carried out.

Sounds low MPG to me, I normally get about 575-600 miles to a full tank, £80, although mine has been re-mapped.

I would say driving style and roads effect mpg more. My OBC mpg sits at 42 but I normally have the range on the displace with the trip zero'd when I fill up. So as long as the 2 sets of numbers adds up to over 600 then I don't worry too much about the economy as this is about 45mpg.

Thoughts.

Firstly, you can't work out anything by putting £30 in because you don't know where you're starting from. You need to do at least one brimful to brimful calculation.

Secondly, how long are your journeys? 30 zones are typically full of traffic lights, roundabouts and junctions which all kill MPG. B roads are ok if they're free-flowing, but if you're accelerating and braking all the time, that's going to kill it too.

I wouldn't even bother looking at your EGR temps until you know what your MPG really is.

Just off topic slightly, but why do people do that?

You use the same amount of fuel whether you put in £5, £50 or £100 at a time. By only putting £30 at a time in you just spend 3x as long at the pumps as I do. I'd rather not be stood on a cold forecourt for any longer than necessary!

It hurts filling up at £90 a time, but it's only once a week, not every 2 days!

^^^ agreed, I have to brim it every-time and I have to make sure I have less than 50 miles on the range.

Depends how your driving in the 30mph zones....I drove to my dads place in Dymchurch the other week, full of slow bends, hills and slow moving traffic. If you drive with no throttle thru the gears then your swing-meter is in over in the 60+mpg the whole time - boring driving tho.
