Tyres on 335D

Here's a question for you all...

My RFT's that I posted about yesterday with the bad tyre wear on the front offside...I decided to look up the cost of replacing the tyres and then decided it might be not much more to just buy a new wheel/tyre package.

So I made a note of the tyre sizes and found something I think is odd...

Both the nearside tyres are 255/35/18
Both the offside tyres are 225/40/18

Aren't both the rear tyres supposed to be wider rather than having both the wider tyres on one side?

Would this make any difference to tyre wear as I still find it slightly odd that the offside front tyre is so badly worn and the nearside one isn't?

I might be completely wrong but if it makes a difference to the tyre wear then obviously that's an issue as I've only had the car since the end of February and the tyres were all checked and 3 of the 4 were fitted brand new when I collected it....

Maybe, maybe not, but I thought I'd ask

How bizarre!

The 255/35/18's should both be on the rear axle.
The 225/40/18's should be on the front.

It would probably explain the tyre wear.

That's what I thought - I didn't know if it would have any bearing on the tyre wear or not though.

Hmmm, having spoken to a few other people it appears it probably does explain the tyre wear...bugger. I've emailed the dealer...see what they want to do about...

I don't think it's anything sinister myself, just that if it explains the bad wear on one tyre maybe I won't have to spend a ton of money replacing it...

If on the other hand it's nothing to do with it I'll put my hand into my pocket without hesitation.

Just seems off that it's gone from new to bald in just over 6 months of not-very-hard driving.

I would also check the tyres are on the correct alloys as they are wider on the rears:

225 40 18 should be on the 8j's at the front
255 35 18 should be on the 8.5j's at the rear

The alloys are stamped on the inside wheel web

That kind of tyre arrangement would make for dangerous / comedy handling surely! I would get them all rebalanced and change all the types for sure. Weird indeed!

That is a bit of a mistake to say the least.

I wonder if the tyres have been mounted on the wrong wheels, or the entire wheels are on the wrong corners.

Either way with the wrong tyres/wheels on the wrong place and probably tyre directions wrong, your car must have been a dog to drive.

Does the car run straight when you let the steering wheel find its centre?

No wonder the tyres are worn badly.

After 7 months I wonder how the dealer will deal with this.

PLEASE TELL ME that it was just wrong tyre on the right alloy and you didn't actually have 2x 8.5J alloys on one side, 2x 8J alloys on the other. Cause that'd cross the boundary between and shouldn't be allowed to drive

OF course they will try and dispute it, because if they admit to it they are both going to have to replace the tyres and admit that a business selling cars for a living can't tell the difference between front and back tyres. Somewhat embarrassing for whomever is culpable..

In the end I took the car to them as I was local to the dealers yesterday and as of checking my emails this morning they still haven't replied to the email I sent a week and a half ago anyway.

When I showed the salesman what had been done he was surprised and said they'd book it in asap to get the wheels switched over. They won't do anything about the worn tyre though as the worn one is one of the ones that's on the right axle. Meh, I'll bite the bullet on that one then. I can't be bothered argueing over it...as for which tyres are on which alloys I haven't dared look yet but I'll be mentioning it to them when it goes in and making sure they double check them to be sure.

Just make sure they put the right tyres on the right wheels now...

and check your tyre pressures...36 psi and 38psi ....or 36 psi all round....
