Burning smell through the vent?

In the past several days, every morning when I start the car (E90, 330i), I have noticed some plastic burning smell through the vent. The smell is most obvious when I drive for less than a mile, stop the car and in idle for a few minutes (at a red light), and then start driving again. The strange thing is that after a while, the smell disappeared for the rest of the day, and comes back again in the morning.

Any idea what's the cause of this and where I should look? I would like to get your opinion on this before bringing it in to the dealer, since by the time I bring it in they may not be to trace the problem as the smell has already disappeared and they will have to wait until the next morning.

Thanks.

Kenny

I have also smelled a burning smell, too. But I normally smell it when I turn the car off and am standing outside the car. I don't know if the two smells are related, just thought I'd throw that in there in case anyone had any info.

Perhaps it's different. This occurs just a few days ago out of the blue, after 2 years of owning the car, and only happen when I start the car for the day...

Does it occur only when the A/C is on?

Well, turns out there is a tiny leak in the valve cover gasket... they are fixing it now...

Thanks.
