Brake maintenance

Hi Folks,

CBS in my car is indicating I'm within 2000 miles of front brake maintenance, the other day the car was in for service (mechatronic sleeve/trans oil pan gasket leak, all covered under CPO warranty) and they checked it for me. It will need pads and rotors.

I will take it to my indy, my question is if I go to something besides OEM, do I need to replace front and rear at the same time, or can I do just the pads/rotors on the front? Rears have almost 10K left according to the CBS.

Dealer quoted me $820 for just the front service (pads/rotors/misc bits). I figure I can get a full install with Stoptech or similar upgrade for not much more than that, but hate to waste the miles left on the rear brakes.

I suspect going non-OEM would require all around replacement to make sure the braking remains balanced front/rear. Is that right? Ideas and thoughts?

You don't have to replace both; I actually just had my rear brakes replaced, but my front brakes also had plenty of time left on them. They are not the same brakes, either--front brakes are OEM, rear brakes are Textar. It has not affected my braking at all.

It's typically suggested to keep similar pads front and rear on a vehicle to maintain braking balance. That being said, it's common to swap out fronts to performance pads then wait for the rears to be close to the end of their useable life.
