Watch DVD on Navigation system ?
Does anyone know if the Nav can be also used as a DVD player? What modifications have to be done if so?

can the nav drive read dvd's? I don't think so, however the oem screen can be used to view dvd's, backup camera feed, and other media. there are a lot a brands that make adapters for this purpose you can find any number of them by just searching the web for something like 'e90 dvd navigation oem screen' or something along those lines. here's one just as an example.... http://www.gnetcanada.com/navvideo-m...gnetbmw356.asp
just to clarify, I do not have idrive on my current 325i, but will have it on my next purchase. |

Never say never...
I'm sure if someone worked really really really hard they would figure a way out how to do it. Hell the iPhone got hacked!!!
You can display video on the screen though. BMW sells a TV-tuner for this. I'm pretty sure it would be in PAL-16 format (Europe) and not NTSC (US) though. If I were to attempt to try to do this, I would first buy the tuner and record the control messages that go back and forth between the tuner and the nav system. Then I would design a box that converts the DVD format to the PAL-16 and audio and connect to the Nav. Then I would put a y-cable on the DVD player that toggles between either the nav or the box. Control of the DVD player wouldn't be perfect as the nav system would think it was communicating with a TV tuner. But I ain't gonna attempt this.

You can only use the stock DVD drive for the Navigation disc or you can burn MP3's to a DVD and play them from the DVD drive. It can not play a DVD movie.
Their are mods out there to convert it to play movies but it is not that easy to do http://www.e90post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=23576 Ed

in europe that capability is there... but it has been disabled in the US because of government restrictions. One interesting thing... I've been told that if you put a dvd full of mp3 files in the nav disk you can play them through the radio.

Watch DVD on Navigation system.
This is not true, you can watch a dvd on the navigation system, just not while the car is moving. I did it last week. also '09+ cars can actually be coded to allow you to watch it while moving.

You're replying to a FIVE YEAR OLD question about a navigation system that's no longer made. The old CCC iDrive was replaced with the newer CIC iDrive in since this question was posted in 2007.
