My 335d is going to dealer on Monday for oil service. As it is over 4 years old it qualifies for the £139 offer which seems pretty decent.

Looking in the manual it quotes needing air and fuel filters replaced at the third oil service which this will be. Question is what mileage intervals should these be replaced, my car is very low mileage for its age, only 40k for nearly 6 years old. Expect the dealer to recommend replacing these but are they really due?

Also anyone any idea of costs so I can be sure the dealer is giving me a decent price. I expect I can easily do the air filter and buy from ECP or similar, probably would let the dealer do the fuel filter.

Had my air, fuel, oil, micro filter and brake fluid all done at the dealers recently, also at 46k - they will need doing, the key scan will confirm this.

£360 total (had the cheap oil offer too)

Bargain, I basically got other prices and a local Indy said something like £318. I phoned them back to haggle and said remove micro filter as was changed recently they said best they could do was £360

I phoned this Indy back and during conversation about my thermostats I realised the service price excluded vat.

So did well with BMW plus they changed the micro filter when their quote excluded it.

I'm fairly sure brake fluid was around £80 or £120 if it was separate.

That should give you an idea on price range

Any idea from your invoice how much the fuel and air filters were, guess there is a bit of labour to fit but shouldn't be a lot.

If its too much I will just do the oil service with them and do the air/fuel myself.

Must say the air filter part cost seems huge

It was down on the sheet as "air intake service"

Not sure what else they did - thought it was 3 clips off with the top and pop in new filter

How long is a unit of labour, 2 units to replace air filter seems a lot because as you say its an easy task. No doubt they will say it involved cleaning around the filter area etc when in reality it was dropped in quickly in 5 mins.

ECP have OEM air filters for less than £20 which sounds a bit more reasonable.

I'm not sure about labour units but the oil was 7 if I remember correctly so maybe 10mins say?

Be thankful you don't have an earlier 320/330d where you have to strain half the fucking engine bay to change the filter, even the strut braces have to come off!

I recently had my 335D serviced by Sytner, it's 3rd oil service so the air filter, oil filter, microfilter, oil change, brake fluid top up and what not needed doing and mine is also fairly low for it's age, 50k mileage for a 7-8yr old car.

I got some discount by:

1. Supplying my own oil (8ltrs from ECP)
2. Haggling (rang around many places) and;
3. Buying all my replacement parts off Cotswold BMW (bmwland.co.uk) as any member gets a small but worthy discount of any BMW part

What I can remember is that all the parts (includeing delivery and discount) came to about £140. The labour charged by Sytner was about £136 inc VAT!! It was by far the BEST price I was getting. Even my local indy was in that same region price wise, with the next best price tag of £450 from main BMW Dealer (for parts and labour)

Worth holding out and haggling and if the OBC says to replace, get it replaced. If not, I'd still do it for peace of mind given you're getting the oil changed and it's the 3rd oil service. It'll only save you labour down the line.

Service completed today, total £217 incl VAT. Oil service £139 and fuel filter £78.

I declined the air filter as will easily do that job myself, not sure whether to buy genuine filter to OEM cheaper version.

Got them to do the fuel filter replacement, total £78 incl VAT. Looking at Brier's info my filter was the same cost, also pipe clamp at £1.17. I then had listed 7 bolts at £0.41 each whatever they were for, my labour was less, still 4 units but total cost of £25.00.

All in all I'm happy enough. They noted brake fluid and microfilter due in Feb. Given it had a microfilter only 6000 miles ago I reckon its fine, brake fluid also around the same mileage interval but guess its a bit more time related than some other service items.

My third oil change was £270 and I supplied my own oil, if I'd known the service price goes down at year 4 I'd have held off until March
