Trunk roundel stubbornly stuck. Won't come off.
I've read about every thread about removing the trunk roundel... I managed to remove the hood roundel easily.
However my trunk roundel is perfectly flush again the trunk, so I can't even stick a THIN plastic card between roundel and trunk (tried top, bottom, and sides), and then use a screwdriver to pry it loose. I can't even stick a flat head screwdriver in there by itself, without any protection for the paint! I have to apply ALOT of pressure just to use my nails to create separation between the trunk and roundel. The build date of my car is Oct 06 (E92). Is this a problem of cold weather? Its below freezing in my garage right now. Will it be significantly easier to remove once its hot outside? This is really bugging me and I want the solution now. |

+1 on fishing line. Much stronger than a bunch of dental floss. Use gloves to keep your fingers whole.

There should be a drain hole at the bottom you can get a thin scree driver in to pry it out a bit so there's space for the fishing line. There's a ring of 3M tape in addition to the pins and grommets so you'll need to heat it with a hair dryer to loosen it up.

I found my GoPro suction worked great for the wheel caps.

Heat it up, use something like an old blockbuster card to detach the glue from the emblem, then finish it off with a suction cup. |

Use a blow dryer to heat it up a little I'm sure thats part of the problem and if you have a trim removal kit that might help depending on what you have including in yours..a friend of mine found on for $5 and its the good type of plastic that's hard but doesn't leave scratches.

Thanks for all the suggestions. I found no drain hole at the bottom of the roundel, its completely flush 360 degrees.
I did manage to remove the roundel. Here's how I did it in case someone searches for this in the future. 1. Get masking tape to mask 360 degrees around the roundel. You can slide the edge of the masking tape between the roundel and the paint. 2. Use a heat gun (or hairdryer) to heat up the roundel and weaken the adhesive. Get tooth floss or fishing line to detach the sticky adhesive at the top AND bottom of the roundel. Use your fingernails to push in the tooth floss because the roundel is very flush. 3. Find the thinnest plastic card you can. Use your finger nail to create separation between the roundel and the paint, pry the top and bottom of the roundel. Now you should have decent separation between the roundel and paint. 4. Find a nylon strap (they use it to wrap it around heavy boxes for reinforcement). Slide the nylon strap from the top of the roundel and exit at the bottom. Now pull the roundel off. If your roundel pins broke into the grommets like mine did then you can push the grommets into the trunk. Insert new grommets after. To remove the grommets that are now in your trunk, open the trunk and pry off the pins and unscrew the screws to remove the carpet portion and retrieve the broken grommets (or you can leave them in the trunk but it rattles when you flip open the trunk). I don't think the suction cup would have worked for me because it required a lot of force to pull with the nylon strap. The roundels bended badly from the force (it was already detached from the adhesive). Last edited by liang; 01-01-2013 at 06:18 PM.. |

Interesting, must be an update. I just put a new rounded on my E92 and it has the hole. They are a bear to remove with or without!

Glad to hear you got it off, the best way for sure is a hair dryer (get it really warm, especially if it's a cold winter day) then use fishing line, not much other things are as thin and strong, slide it under, slide it back and forth to remove and adhesive and boom off.

I actually use the dentil floss technique with a 'sawing' motion starting @ either top or bottom to break 3M tape adhesion, then pry rest of the way using one of those special nylon pry tools sold by ECS Tuning...
