Dealer said oil bolt over torqued and because so it was leaking. Would this not have caused damage to the oil pan if this were true?

Not necessarily. The oil drain pan bolt gets a copper washer that can fail if tightened too much...its made to fail first so that you don't damage the pan. It probably cracked the washer and is leaking because of it. Heck maybe they reused the washer and it leaked because of that.
Could be a cracked pan if tightened WAY too much, but try replacing washer (which always comes with the oil filter kits) and re-torquing bolt first. |

dealer said that I was due an oil change and changed it again. That is how they discoverd it. It was not by mileage or time. But heck they did it for free.
I think I am going to get an oil cock valve so I can do it myself easily.

The only problem with those oil cock valves is they are SLOW. I had one in another car, and removed it for a magnetic drain plug so I wouldn't have to wait 30 min for the oil to drain.

What is so hard about using a drain plug? Torque it down until it is snug and add a slight tap on the ratchet handle with the side of your fist and you are good to go.
