Shift lock on gear selector for Auto

Hi Guys,
I have recently bought a e90 lci 325i with auto box & been loving it so far.
This is my first auto car & wanted to know do we have to press the button on the gear selector always when changing from D,N,R,P? sorry i m newbie to auto boxes.

it is normally required when selecting R, this is mainly a safety mechanism so that you dont select R incorrectly!

You can change from N to D without pressing the button and vice versa. As has been said by Anthony you'll need to press the button to put it in R and of course, press it when putting it in P.
