MOT advice re rear brakes
My car only just passed it's MOT last year and the problem appears to be the rear brakes.
I was advised by BMW that these only account for 20% of the braking force on the car, which is especially odd as the rear brakes have been changed once and the front ones never! Here is the exert from the MOT document: Measurements: Brakes advisories: RBT Service Brake Efficiency: 55%, RBT Park Brake Efficiency: 18% Advisory Items: 001 Service brake Your vehicle has only just met the required service brake efficiency. It would appear that the braking requires adjustment or repair. (3.7.A.9) 002 Parking brake Your vehicle has only just met the required park brake efficiency. It would appear that the braking system requires adjustment of repair. (3.7.A.10) 003 Nearside rear brake is slightly binding. 004 Rear brakes are slightly imbalanced. ................. Now all this is interesting, as I've called BMW out regarding a problem with juddering brakes on my 320d, the chap explained that it's caused by a build op of rust on the discs and I needed to brake harder to remove it, could this principle work with my 325d? I need to get this working better in the next few weeks as my MOT is upcoming, any suggestions appreciated Thanks |

The majority of wear on the rear brakes will be from DSC intervention.
I'd at the very least have the rear pads out and check/clean/lube up as required. |

I had to replace my rear pads recently at 28K miles. Fronts have loads left. As said previously its due to the traction control using the rear brakes to limit wheel spin as there is no LSD. After a spirited drive its common for the rear brakes to give off that familiar hot brake smell. I suppose I could drive like a granny but then why did I buy a BMW ?

If the rear bakes are rusty a couple of
High speed hard braking will clean up the discs. This assumes they are ok, but just rusty. Don't do this if you feel there are other issues
