iPad hardwire

So, I am installing an iPad in my car and I am looking at ways to charge it. I tried the belkin micro USB charger that plugs into the cir lighter but it turns out that it does not provide enough power to charge the iPad efficiently.

The belkin was putting out 5v and 1 amp. I think I need around 4 to 6 amps to charge it effectively.

Does anyone know of a way to get that power out of the car and have it run to a female USB?

The iPad needs 10W whereas the iPhone/Touch and iPods use 5W to charge, thus the reason it charges slowly. You need a 10V 1A charger, or a 5V 2A. Or anything higher than that.

I'm also trying to figure out the best way of charging an ipad in a car. I have bought a couple of products to test in the car, but wont be able to test until tonight when I get home.

If you search amazon, there are plenty of 2.1A and 3A cigarette to usb adapters available. However you will have to be careful when choosing (read reviews) so as not to introduce noise when playing audio thru your stereo when charging. A common problem with apple products(and others) due to non shielding.

I will let you know my findings before you race ahead and purchase anything.

This will be tested on a BMW mini with HK system.

Hope this helps
