Improper Tire Rotation

So I purchased my e92 335i, used fron the dealer last year and just realized that the previous owner incorrectly had the larger wheel/tire (255/35-18) on the front and the smaller wheel (225/40-18) placed on the rear, and only on the driver side! Explains why the handling has always felt off. I'm kicking myself for not picking up on this sooner. Anyways, now that its on correctly, what should I look out for in terms of problems this might have created? Alignment issues?

How long did you drive it like that (miles)? I know issues can be had for running different diameter tires. I've never checked to see is the 255/35 tires are the same height as the 225/40. Either way I would say if you haven't had any rear diff issues thus far, you probably won't. You could check your rear diff fluid to see if there are any metal shavings in the housing from the axles turning at different speeds. Toyota dealer did me a favor like that when they rebalanced my tires. I went to get my car and noticed they put the fronts on the back and the backs on the front. Looked strange right off the bat surprised u didn't notice but I'm not judging lol. Good luck.

yes I feel like a complete idiot. I've had it for about 8-9k miles but who knows how long they were on that way before I got it. Besides the poor handling during that period I haven't noticed any other issues. How would i know if there was a rear diff problem without draining the diff fluid? Thanks.

You might have someone drive you car forward and backward while you listen from outside by the rear of the car...worth a shot i guess. or maybe it would "clunk" when you put it in gear(automatic) or when you first takeoff (manual).

Foreman, thanks for the info. According to 1010tires.com the overall diameter is 25.08 inches front and 25.02 rear so I'm a little less concern now.

Yeah I wouldn't worry about that. I've seen tread wear worse than that.

You may have to replace the tires, as they are not worn symetricaly and may never handle proper anymore. For the rest I doubt it matters, the radius difference is low enough that the diff should have survived.

(225/40-18) and (255/35-18) are the same diameter so there shouldn't be any problems with drive train that is why you see most cars that go with wider tires in rear step down the sidewall that's to keep the same rotating diameter across all 4wheels when you go with two wider tires rear too 2 narrow tires front Porsche, Lamborghini, and Audi r8 all do that from factory with there all-wheel drive cars so only thing you should have had happen from wide tire on front is weird handling from your rear wheel drive or xdrive car and a bit more wear on your 225 cause it was one a drive wheel.
