how common is this engine problem? Sounds bad.
I have a 320d 2006 with 163 hp, with 50k miles on the clock.

FINALLY!
It's all sorted now, the noise has totally gone ![]() I picked up the car on saturday, it's is so much quieter now and the engine sounds great. Though the final bill came to £3700 even with a very healthy discount. I was very impressed with sytners as a main dealer, particularly Pat Smith my service advisor, she helped make a difficult situation a lot easier. hopefully i can enjoy some trouble free bmw motoring for a while now.... |

You might want to take a look at my thread regarding the exact same repair on my LCi 330d (N57 engine). Can i ask if your price included oil and filter replenishment? Did you contact BMW UK directly? Last edited by AdrianSi; 11-08-2011 at 04:50 AM.. |

I have the same noise in my 2010 320d with 41,000km on it.
I will be taking the car in for inspection next week, but not really sure if i should give the go for dismantling the entire engine (if the dealer should say that's the case), as i talked to two other guys who did the operation, just to get the noise back soon after (2-3months/5000km after). They have been using the car like that ever since, without any other problems. I really think it's just the way this engine sounds and there's nothing to worry about. After all, a timing chain will make more noise than a belt.

but yes, it did include oil and filter change. I also had the clutch replaced at cost of parts, while the engine was out. yes i did contact bmw uk but they were not interested. My car is now due a brake fluid service which is quoted at £101, and booked in at sytners cov for a week this saturday. Last edited by davethefish; 02-23-2012 at 06:33 PM.. |

Jesus.
These threads are REALLY putting me of another BMW. Shocking. OP: my first port O call would be to write to BMW and ask them "What is the anticipated lifespan in excess of for the timing chain and acilliary parts" You know the reply will be useful in court. Then small claims it. With luck the 'reputational damage limitation division' of BMW will kick in and maybe gets settled before judgement. Easily worth a punt - but SCC fees are more than stated and based on a sliding scale. More likely a court fee will be in excess of £400.

Hi All,
I am annoyed at the fact that BMW cars have such shoddy workmanship. It is not possible to go on a peaceful holiday with the family considering the fact that this N47 issue will be on the backburner. I own a 520 D fitted with a N47 Engine. I get my car serviced by a local mechanic who has worked for BMW for 25 years. The first thing he said when he saw the engine number- '' You shouldnt have bought the N47''. Who would realise that BMW would stoop down to the level of Proton cars. I am so troubled by this issue that I have written to the Chief Executive of BMW , telling him how disgusted I am with their cars. I want to start a facebook campaign against BMW. I am a medical doctor. I am hoping to speak to the British Medical association with a view to publishing an article in their journal about this issue. I think we cant be timid about this issue. Although I dont have any issues which have cropped up, I am worried as my car is out of warrantly . I have an extended BMW warranty though, however, it is unacceptable to me atleast to spend 17,500 on a luxury car and live with this mental torment. More recently , I saw a 1 series with a N47 Engine in my mechanics garage . The RAC[ the driver has a warranty with RAC] are refusing to pay for the repair as they dont think timing chains should fail at 30,000 Miles as they did with that car. Unless we do something, we will be taken for granted. Anyone wants to start a campaign, please contact me. |

An article in a medical journal about timing-chain failures?

Sorry Xenon,
Didnt make myself clear. Basically , the British Medical association has a scheme that finances cars for doctors. They print a journal , which is mainly medical but it also has space for miscellaneous isues. Since they finance car purchases for Medics, they welcome any issues of concern to be published. One of my friends who had major trouble with a landrover threatened to write about the quality of their service in the journal. Within a week, his repairs were taken care of. It is just a suggestion. It may sound outrageous to some . |

Hi cooper man- ta for quick response- Maybe exhaust but it does sound like the chain examples on YouTube to me - I had a merc diesel that had a tiny split on manifold hose and it ticked whilst driving - This only seems to happen whilst reving engine.
Any other opinions gratefully received - cheers Ps- Velcro for my phone Last edited by johngg; 02-21-2013 at 04:16 AM.. |
