Lets get existential with this...Does a tree falling in the forest make a sound if there is no one there to hear it? Does a BMW feel faster if the air filter has been replaced?

Is your objective to have a hot tart (or your wife in some cases) feel the extra 1.5hp at 3800 rpms and say, "hey big boy, is that a pencil in your pocket or did you just swap that paper filter for a K&N?" Sorry, the K&N is not going to serve your purpose.

If you feel it or hear it, then its real.
To each his own of course. I'd rather save the $60 for an autocross or for something that will make me faster. Mods can make a car faster but the driver makes the biggest difference.

No, it produces waves of compressed air. It's only sound when the compressed air causes the ear drum to vibrate... Sound is your brain's interpretation of the electrical pulses generated by the vibrating ear drum.

I have had K&N's in both my E90, now the E92. I seriously doubt there is any decent gain you will see on the dyno. This has been discussed at length several times. If that is what you are looking for, this is not the item you're looking for.

That being said, on the 325 and 328 if you add the K&N, and remove the charcoal filter there is a HUGE difference in throttle response. It is worth it by far. It may not increase horsepower, but you will feel a difference. For me, not a big difference in sound. It has a little more growl under 3/4 to full throttle under load, but not that big of a deal to my ears in everyday driving.

Just my observations from running them for a few years. I feel the throttle response is worth it. It is very noticeable.

JIMD have you ever had to aplly the oil to the K&N? I think they claim it's only needed every 50k miles or so....just wondering if that's accurate. Thanks.

The aFe is what I plan to get when it comes out in the next few weeks, I have used aFe with good results on other cars in the past few years. They seem to be constructed a little better than K&N and the filtration test results are better according to this (archived on my website, the original link does not appear to work any longer):
