Bought Used Should I change Oil?
Hello There,
Just bought my first BMW, an 08 328i with 44K on it. I purchased it from a large chain of dealerships about an hour away who had taken it as a trade. They did some little things to the car like tire rotation, new wipers, full detail, no major mechanical stuff (it didn't need it), but they did do an oil change on the vehicle. Since they Sell Hyundai/Kia, Chrysler/Ford, I am suspect of the oil change that was done. Meaning I can't be sure if they used BMW spec synthetic oil and I haven't heard back from the sales guy as to if he can find out. So a couple of questions... 1. Does the hive mind of the forum think I should have it changed again by the dealer/or local indie euro shop I know of? 2. How much damage could it potentially do if I don't have it changed? 3. Looking at the sticky thread on oil it looks like i need LL01 to be in spec, correct? Thanks for the help guys. I plan to keep the car indefinitely so any info is appreciated. |

Getting the oil changed on a non-M is fairly inexpensive just for a little piece of mind.
If you are losing sleep over it just do it yourself or have an independent German shop do it for you.

Alright. I guess if they used a 5w30 Synthetic it should be ok though...right?
I don't necessarily want to do it right away, but I would likely do it much sooner than the scheduled maintenance for the car would suggest. |

Congrats on your first Bimmer!
Assuming they used 5w30 synthetic, you are probably OK, but if it's not BMW approved oil, I'd change in about 7k miles or so. Like many others, my dealer periodically offers coupons for a $79.95 Oil & Filter change - normal charge is around $110 or so and parts are about $75 online at Tischer (getbmwparts.com). Tom |

I was in your exact same situation, I took car to dealer for an oil change. I figured it would be a couple hundred bucks for peace of mind that it was done with the right oil, and also since car was out of warranty they'd be looking for things to fix on the car so I'd be aware of anything needing repair. They found a leaking oil filter seal and that was it, so I was much more relaxed having the car after that. YMMV...

Thanks for the advice guys. I sincerely appreciate how welcoming the BMW community here has been. Tons of great info on these boards.
Buddy of mine who recently sold his 97 528 and another one he had just gave me a socket for the oil fiter tonight... I might just get the kit and do it myself. Thanks! |

Change the oil! I got my used 08 335i from a Range Rover/Jag dealer that said they had done all the 30k services. I took it to my trusty Indy shop anyway. The oil was sludge. The filter was some aftermarket brand we'd never heard of and it was missing an o-ring. Peace of mind....oil is cheap. Dealers lie. That's just the way it is.

I have complete records on the car as it was a local owner who traded in to the dealer I got it front and carfax showed it was serviced at the local BMW Dealership all of its life.
I took it to an indie euro shop about 40 minutes north of me before I bought it and had it thoroughly checked. BMW Diags, checked all fluids, and mechanical check. These guys do great work and were highly recommended by several local folks I know. They gave me a big thumbs up on the car and said I'd be crazy not to get it because it's as good as used ones get. I was thinking about doing Oil and Plugs just to do them. I got a message back from the dealer I bought it at after asking if they had done it, they stated they did a change with Castrol 5w30 Synthetic. I'm sure it's just a basic synthetic though and doesn't measure up to the LL01 stuff it should have. I bought Mann cabin air and Oil filters last night on amazon so I'll have them shortly. Need to find a good source for the Mobile 1 0w40. Local dealer sells the BMW 5w30 oil for too much $$ Thanks for the advice, any other thoughts are thoroughly appreciated. |
