That's pretty cool. How much music do you have on it? I've got a 32gb stick and that takes about 6 or 7 minutes to index, 120gb must take ages (assuming its full of course!)

5 or 6 second?!! Are you talking about being able to search by artist or album, or just being able to access the folders? Accessing the folders is quick yeah.

When I initially plugged it in... Admittedly it took perhaps 30 seconds or so to pop up on screen but then if it’s left plugged in, it’s almost instant to choose and access files and albums... definitely no long delays... I can film and youtube if it helps?

Don't go to any trouble mate, but thanks anyway.
This is the first time I've heard of indexing such a large drive so quickly. I wonder if its your version of car software or the hdd it's self? So you're definitely talking about the searching feature here and not simply the ability to browse the actual folders like you'd see on the PC?

Ah, ok, maybe this is on the new Idrive then.
On mine, I can search by artist for example, and it will list all the songs by that artist, regardless of which album they are in. But, it has to scan the whole disk before you can do this. If I don't want to wait I can just search the drive as if I would on the PC, i.e folders and subfolders.

Have (or had) you imported the music to the iDrive HDD [from your stick]?

I've done this in the past, but only because the usb in the arm rest was broken. Now that it's fixed I just use that as the capacity on my stick is much bigger than the internal HDD.

Yep, I think that is the reason.
It's a bit annoying but as I say, I can still access the music pretty much staight away if I do it the old fashioned way so I can live with it.

Why not buy an 160Gb iPod for 200 euro's and you have all the storage you want? You can even track it with last.fm when you reconnect it to your apple/pc.
Though I must admit, my 32Gb stick isn't near full. I have a brandnew BMW with iDrive and Logic7, the directory browsing is instant, but I have to wait a few minutes to get the id3 tags to kick in (artist/album) .. The CD Covers are pretty neat btw.. Hans |
