Hey guys... Just a quick heads up if you need more music storage for yr motor.... I recently bought a Samsung S1 120GB 1.8" External USB2 Hard Drive for my car to store & playing MP3 music.... works pretty good via I drive, a lot more easier to add swap and change music to than Ipod looks pretty cool too, comes with various USB leads a case simular to a blackberry and glows neon blue

Found it on fleabay for £59.95 with free P&P....

Full spec below...

The S1 Mini 1.8-inch portable hard drive delivers the ultimate in convenient portability. Weighing just 0.19 lbs, the light weight, compact form factor and sleek glossy casing design make the S1 Mini an aesthetically appealing device for extra portable storage capacity. Powered directly from the USB port on a PC, the S1 Mini can backup and carry your important files from office or school to home, anywhere you need them.

Added features enhance the usability of the S1 Mini external hard drive. A Samsung Auto backup function allows the user to program the default backup in real time or as scheduled. A SecretZone protects important files and data in the form of software-based AES-128bit or AES-256bit encryption. The external drive owner's data is also locked with a password-protecting SafetyKey which ensures data security. You can also easily check available space in the S1 Mini through the capacity gauge icon located on the taskbar of Microsoft Windows operating systems.

That's pretty cool. How much music do you have on it? I've got a 32gb stick and that takes about 6 or 7 minutes to index, 120gb must take ages (assuming its full of course!)

5 or 6 second?!!

Are you talking about being able to search by artist or album, or just being able to access the folders? Accessing the folders is quick yeah.

When I initially plugged it in... Admittedly it took perhaps 30 seconds or so to pop up on screen but then if it’s left plugged in, it’s almost instant to choose and access files and albums... definitely no long delays... I can film and youtube if it helps?

Don't go to any trouble mate, but thanks anyway.

This is the first time I've heard of indexing such a large drive so quickly. I wonder if its your version of car software or the hdd it's self?

So you're definitely talking about the searching feature here and not simply the ability to browse the actual folders like you'd see on the PC?

I've checked on the Idrive and theres no facility to search? only scroll through files/flolders/albums/tracks and select...

my car has pro audio with logic7 but it's pre LCI... ?

Ah, ok, maybe this is on the new Idrive then.

On mine, I can search by artist for example, and it will list all the songs by that artist, regardless of which album they are in. But, it has to scan the whole disk before you can do this.

If I don't want to wait I can just search the drive as if I would on the PC, i.e folders and subfolders.

Have (or had) you imported the music to the iDrive HDD [from your stick]?

I've done this in the past, but only because the usb in the arm rest was broken. Now that it's fixed I just use that as the capacity on my stick is much bigger than the internal HDD.

Interesting - this is instant on the new idrive with an ipod. I guess because the car is reading the itunes library file, rather then every file on the hard drive.

Yep, I think that is the reason.

It's a bit annoying but as I say, I can still access the music pretty much staight away if I do it the old fashioned way so I can live with it.

Why not buy an 160Gb iPod for 200 euro's and you have all the storage you want? You can even track it with last.fm when you reconnect it to your apple/pc.

Though I must admit, my 32Gb stick isn't near full.

I have a brandnew BMW with iDrive and Logic7, the directory browsing is instant, but I have to wait a few minutes to get the id3 tags to kick in (artist/album) ..

The CD Covers are pretty neat btw..

Can anyone say which filesystem the external hard drive needs to be in?
