1st Post - 335d advice

Hi

I've been lurking for a while, as I'm getting near to ordering a car I thought it prudent to ask for some advice.

I currently drive an Audi Avant 2 TDI s-line which is a on a PCP scheme with a fixed monthly payment and a Guaranteed Future Value. The car is up for renewal at the end of November, due to the low GFV and high trade in price its likely that I will have a decent (probably about 3.5k) deposit to put down on a new car.

My plan is to order a Black MY08 335d M-sport Coupe with Bluetooth Telephone preparation, Navigation System Professional, USB IPod interface, Individual sun protection dark tinted glazing, Dakota leather upholstery & 19" 225 M alloys. Once I have the car i'll be getting black kidney grills and a re-map once run-in. I'm also torn on the idea of getting some 19" replica CSL alloys in gun-metal (although i'm concerned I'd just look like an M3 wannabe)

I shopped around for price and finance and so far the best deal I have come across is £656 per month for 36 months at 20k per annum and a 10% deposit.

I'm pretty set on what I need and can afford, I suppose my questions are :
  • Does the finance sound like a good deal ? its with the company I am already with so they effectivley have my deposit.
  • Whats the current build time on a 335d coupe ?
  • Would it make sense to delete the 19" wheels, stick with m-sport 18s and then buy a new set of 19" replica alloys with 'proper' tyres ? in the long run I would actually save money if I use more then 4 tyres due to the cost of run flats.
  • If I replace all the runflats what do I do about a spare wheel ?
  • Any other options I should consider ?

If anyone has feedback on the below, feel free to let me know (via PM if need be)
Thanks for taking the time to help a potential new BMW owner out.

Thanks

Simon

Good choice of car and welcome Simon. You are in a good position for the MY08 which comes with more efficient engine, it doesnt start build until week 36 apparantly, which is beginning of September and factory build time is about 6-8 weeks. Although if you ordered now you would get it 4 weeks after build ~ beginning of October.

Sounds like a great spec to me, options are always a personal choice but the concensus is that Pro Nav is essential. As for wheels, I am not a fan of anything other than standard ones and I have gone for the Style 225 19's. No doubt there will be loads more advice about that. As for finance, I am in the process of sorting mine out, I have got a bigger deposit (£9400) and do lower miles 10K per year and I am looking at around £450/month with a PCP residual of about £21700. Do a search for Finance and quite a bit will pop up.

You should get about 10-11% discount if you are free to shop around, I wasnt and got 6%. Try www.carfile.net they have decent discounts and an online calculator, also www.uknewcars.co.uk

Thanks, coast2coast offer about 11% discount on the car, one thing I've never been sure about does it make sense to have a lower or higher GFV ?

I prefer higher GFV as it keeps monthly cost down. There still should be a bit of equity in the car in my view, even if the GFV is high. My quote was from BMW finance and I cannot believe that they would give a Guaranteed value that was wildy optimistic given that they bear the risk if the value falls through the floor. Interestingly I have called quite a few finance houses and BMW offer the highest future value by a long margin. Pehaps it indicates that they have greater faith in their car values than anyone else!

I would suggest that you have a look at a lease purchase deal. By taking some of the risk on the resale value you may reduce your monthly payments.

You may also find this loan calculator useful:

http://www.dynamic-webs.co.uk/inform...alculator.html

You haven't provided the key elements of the finance deal .. the GMFV, the invoice value and the interest rate, so it's difficult to comment.

According to theaa.com online valuation tool an 04 plate 330cd is worth about £14,400 in average condition as a trade in.

Drive the deal would do the car for £41,200 in that spec. With a 10% deposit and a GMFV of 45% (circa £18,450) that would mean an APR below 7%.

Sounds like a great deal to me.

WELCOME over from the dark side, you won't regret it.But always remember whatever you choose you are now purchasing a drivers car

re - finance, can't help much, got mine for £40k dead paid £20 as dep and have always gone for straight finance,i just like to think that i can sell at anytime if needs be, although i did use BMW finance as they were in the right area..with there figures

8% Min Discount and don't forget thats off total purchase price

Re Wheels 19''s are a £500 ish option and wel worth it

BMW have now sorted the RFT'S so ride is fine, even on the rfts, spending any more on changing would be a waste IMO

Rest of spec is just down to your choice really, but have a look at Comfort Access its exspensive but well

That is a fairly low GFV, I assume it is because of the annual mileage. My GFV was £5K more @ 10,000 miles per year!!

I think that looks pretty good - especially the 10% discount.

You could push for a better interest rate. I know that they will offer lower, but I think you will need to show that you can do better elsewhere.

You also need to decide how happy you are with the GMFV

www.theaa.com do free online valuations. They reckon that an 04 plate 330d m-sport with 60,000 miles would be worth around £14,500 average condition trade in value.

Your GMFV is around 45% - which I think is pretty good for a 60k mile car. However, I also think that they will make money at resale time. You could try to push for around 50% - which would be remarkable on a 20,000 mile a year PCP.

I might be a bit confused about the whole GMFV thing, which is better a higher or lower ? when teh 3 year lease ends I want to avoid having to raise another 10% deposit so am happy to have a lower GMFV value set so that there is some equity in the car.

But then reading some other posts it seems people prefer higher final valuations as this reduces their monthly payment ?

Can any one help with a bit of advice ?

If you are definitely going to buy the car at the end of the term (i.e. actually pay off the GMFV) then keeping it lower will reduce the total interest payable, simply because you are paying more of the loan off earlier:

For a £30k loan (with 10% deposit) over 3 years at 8% APR.

35% GMFV = interest cost of £ 4469.46

25% GMFV = interest cost of £ 4145.02

You could then potentially sell the car for more than the GMFV and come away with some money for another car. However this 'equity' is really just the 'extra' amount that you paid in early by setting the GMFV lower.

If you are going to give the car back then the following applies:

35% GMFV = total payment £ 20,969.64

25% GMFV = total payment £ 18,293.76

So the lower GMFV saves you £ 324 in interest, but if you don't keep the car it costs you £ 2,675.88 in additional payments.

Because I know I will never keep a car for more than 3 years I would try to get the GMFV as high as possible.

As Needforspeed says, are you going to buy the car at the end of the agreement or just give the keys back and walk away? From your previous comments, it looks to me that you looking to have some equity in the car at the end of the agreement, so I would go for a lower GMFV.

BTW, is your finance quote from BMW, as your figures suggest 36 mths at £651.87 + a final payment in mth 37 of £16,696.00? Any quotes I got from BMW are 35 mth + final payment in mth 36. Also there is no mention of set up costs and final purchase costs, which can add about another £200 in costs (and change your APR to 9.2%).
