iPhone 5 2009 I-drive compatibility
So after searching few threads I'm still confused.
Previously i've been using the bmw ycable with my ipod dock connector(usb+aux) no snap case along with my iphone 4 and it worked fine, controlled everything i drive, it charged, etc.. Fast forward i updated to iphone 5, and waited for the 30 pin adapter and I get the unauthorized charging error. I tried just a generic lighting cable plugged into the usb to iphone and it charges fine, but still gives the error. However with the adapter i can not see my music on idrive. So I search and searched and could not find a iphone 5 bmw y cable, is there one out yet? Otherwise how can I control music via idrive and get all the functionality back. I was thinking for now I could juse use an aux + lighting to charge but its annoying to use the iphone to control the songs.... Any help is appreciated.

according to the Iphone5 sticky on this forum you should be able to connect the existing 30-pin y cable to an official lightning adapter and get full functionality.
can you confirm that you have an official BMW y-cable and an official 30-pin to lightning adapter? |

you cannot control songs through idrive with an iphone 5. You can have two seperate cords: 1 x lightning (charge) 1 x 3.5 mm to play music through aux. I phone 4s had an analog connector. iphone 5 connector is digital so even with the adaptor you still lose functionality.

I'm having the same problem.
I just upgraded to the 5, bought a lightning adapter on ebay and plugged it into my factory y-cable and the only function that works is charging. My music library doesn't display on idrive. I read another thread on here where someone had luck and was able to retain all functions of steering wheel and charging. Could it possibly be the quality of the adapter being from ebay and not from an Apple store? Very frustrating, any help is appreciated. |

Mine works as well with OE y cable and Apple adapter.

I'm using the .2m Lightning to 30-pin cable (which is identical electrically to the version without cable, but works with most all cases) going to the old 30-pin Y cable. This setup works for all y cable features - track control, audio, etc. Some iDrive systems use iPod Out (which is different from the iPod Accessory Protocol that non-idrive systems use), and iPod Out is not supported by the lightning adapter. I think, basically, if you could previously see your iPod screen on the iDrive screen (with album art and whatnot), that will break. Perhaps for those systems everything will break. I will say this: I've had some grounding issues between the adapter and Y cable. Every so often, all the control features stop working (the headunit switches to 'aux' mode, and there's still audio). You can tell this is going to be a problem by unplugging the phone and turning up the volume in 'aux' mode. If you hear clicking and buzzing noises, that's the Y cable looking for the adapter. Basically, jiggle the connection until you don't hear noise anymore. |

I have the 30 pin to lightning adapter going to the y cable. I occasionally have the error that it can't charge but usually works without issue.

don't have an iphone 5, but been having issues with my ipad mini. another member on this forum said that with just the authentic apple lightning to usb cable he was able to get his iphone 5 to get audio and charge going in his e90. i had tried getting the same cable from the ipad mini to the usb dock. it doesn't charge nor does it send out audio. any ideas? do you guys think ipad minis just suck or what?!
p.s. more than likely i have a combox in this 08 e92 335xi...question is, if i get the ycable connected with a lightning to 30 pin adapter, will i be able to see data of songs and artists on my non navi equipped head unit? Last edited by 949Banker; 03-12-2013 at 01:52 AM.. |

No you don't. You only have a combox if you have iDrive, and I'm pretty sure it wasn't even a thing in '08. Anyway, the regular old USB cable would have worked if you did. Since we've established that you DON'T have a combox, but rather 6FL (a MULF), yes, the Y cable and lightning adapter should work just fine.

1. Purchased the Y Cable. 2. Used both Authentic Apple Lightning to 30 Pin Adaptor and Cable. RESULTS: 1. Audio plays perfectly. 2. Links up under "Ipod" on the stock head unit. 3. Data of Artists and Songs show. UNFORTUNATELY....=( It does not charge the Ipad Mini. I have a feeling the Ipad Mini requires more juice than an Iphone 5 for it to pick up a charge. What are your thoughts guys?

It IS charging the iPad. Just so slowly that with the screen and radios on, there may be a net loss.
Anyway, you're right, the MULF only puts out like 150mA tops for the iPad to consume. The wall charger puts out 2.1A. You can splice in a cigarette lighter power supply, but that's not for the faint of heart. |
