Angled tires?

Sometimes I see lowered cars with angled tires... I'm just curious.. what's the point? Wouldn't the wheel well frame hit the rim if you went over a bump? I just feel like it ruins the whole look of the car. Opinions?

I don’t mind pretty aggressive fitments, but ridiculous camber is ridiculous.

I think its just a result of lowering some suspension systems inproperly. I doubt its a desired look.

I could be wrong. it happens

Camber to a certain degree increases handling, imagine your tires biting into pavement sideways, if they were cambered into the pavement they would grip considerably more. Consider it like an embankment on an off ramp.

Back in the days this 'aggressive' look got adopted by the drift scene to lower traction but still have that mean look and 'JDM angle.'

From there it exploded and is being portrayed at an over exaggerated sense like anything nowadays. Big wheels, big camber, big wings, big dudes.

wait what?

Depending on the tires used and how the car is driven having a bit of negative camber (top of tire angled inward) may be desirable for improved handling. It's also a natural consequence of a lowered suspension, unless the owner takes car to either add in adjustable toe links or camber plates and adjust the negative camber out. Typically cars come from the factory with 0 camber, which optimizes the tire patch in straight-ahead driving - and hence optimizes braking- and also optimizes tire wear. But a couple of degrees of negative camber can help reduce tire sidewall "roll over" in sharp cornering, improving grip in the corner abd reducing understeer, so it's a mod that autocrossers and track junkies typically employ, ecven thoigh it leads to premature wear of the tread along the inside edge. And for the really agressive driver using R compound tires for track about 3 degrees negative camber is recommended for best grip.

Of course dialing in negative camber for the aesthetics only is a fad that some will do - like "upgrading" to over-size rims and rubber band trires, or "slamming" the suspension to reduce gap in the wheel arches.

It is, in fact, a VERY desired look. At least to a certain group. This is a style of modding called VIP, originated from Japan. They even have magazines devoted to this.

I Googled it, and while everyone is entitled to their opinion and "style" is a personal thing, it looks goofy to me... same with "donking" a car. But, as said: each to their own. As long as the owners of those cars are happy, who cares what anyone else thinks?

Cheers!

I came over from the VW scene. Those guys are all about "slam, poke, and stretch", all of which look really dumb to me.

One of the main reasons I sold my GTI was feeling like I needed a car culture with a few fewer kids in it.
