2006 BMW 325i E90 (mfg'd feb 2006) diagnose / code?

Hi,
Newbie here.... Stumbled upon this section of the forum when I was looking for information on my service light (service engine soon)... and was interested in how to reset it and do other diagnostics as I do my own mechanical work/repairs/maintenance.

So the questions are:
What electronic tools and software should I buy/add to my toolbox to be able to:
1. read/diagnose trouble codes (BMW dealer codes)
2. reset trouble codes / service lights
3. if possible, program / code the vehicle to do cool things like
a. close windows and sunroof from fob
b. turn off annoying seat belt alarm

I saw some INPA cables on ebay from China. Not sure if they will work. I noticed they will only work with mfg dates post march 2007 which is newer than my vintage.

Can my vintage (Feb 2006) be coded? If not, what can I do to make it code-able without breaking the bank or spending excessive time on it?

Thanks for any help. Recommendations, suggestions, places/brands to buy stuff would be appreciated.

Thanks,
Krishna

You can buy a cable along with software on Ebay for less than 50 bucks
delivered (kcan cable) you should know your way around a PC and be a little bit of
a hacker.
Expect some to put some time in setting it up and learning to use it.
Yes you can do diags and reprogram the car to some extent.

Thanks ctuna. I"ll look at the Kcan cable on ebay.
I did peruse the sticky notes above. They were a bit over my head (at the present time but that may change in due time).
Yeah, I'm quite familiar with computers and programming. I'm a mechanical engineer and did lots of programming/scripting. However, I work a ton of hours so time isn't exactly on my side. Willing to pay someone to help me get the ball rolling and teach me the basics.

You want one the gives you DIS57 and SSS

You want one the gives you DIS57 and SSS.
DIS57 is the software tool the BMW used to use on these
cars for diagnostics. Inpa will also do diagnostics but its more
cryptic and in partially in German.
Also it should give you the basic programs like inpa ebidas and ncsexpert
you want the newest versions possible . You may still have to update
these on the Internet but its less of pain than trying to download it from all of
the sites available.

http://www.ebay.com/itm/BMW-USB-OBD-...b475a7&vxp=mtr

something like the above there are more like this at ebay motors.

It only has to be a KCAN cable unless you want to do newer cars. (07 to now)

You will need a 32bit operating system with ncsexpert or the ability to use xp mode with a 64 bit windows system .

Wrong, NCS exper and the others work with Win 64 bit.
Only for DIS you need Virtual machine.

Got it. I have Win7 Ultimate 64bit.

I might get the cable ctuna mentioned. I might get the package with both cables as I'm interested in buying another car (newer, hopefully a MT wagon) and give my current one to my wife (she drives a crappy chevy that we both hate).

ncsexpert 64 bit version ?

ncsexpert 64 bit version ?
Is there a new version ?
Because if you do a search on ncsexpert or 64 bit it comes
up over and over again it won't work with a 64 bit windows operating
system.
Indeed I have read countless times of people running into a roadblock
with this.
