Cracked 19" Wheels

Not sure if this has been covered before but i thought i would pass on my experiences from today.

after a week of issues with getting my 2009 320d M-Sport Coupe ready for the MOT i had the icing on the cake today.

i took it in to the tyre fitter to get two new ear tyres fitted (255/30/R19 non-Run Flats) and when they took the wheels off they identified that both wheels had cracks in them on the inner edge about 1 1/2 inches long.

they tell me this is from running the run flat tyres, they have seen this problem of loads of cars that use run flats.

i had to go and get the wheels welded by a specialist welder that i know (Project Fabrication in Newbury) before i could have the tyres fitted.

not sure if anyone else has had the same problem? if not you may want to check you wheels.....

Poxy Run Flat tyres!!!

i have to say that since having the non-Run Flat tyres fitted it feels a lot nicer to drive.

Sorry to hear man its never nice discovering these things. With the state of the roads these days one almost spends more time looking at the road they're about to drive on rather than awareness around them

Thought welding the wheels wasn't advised?

Go and buy 2 OEM wheels to replace... Or go and buy a new set of 4 copies that are just as good for the same price!

I rather get it welded than have to cough up 4 new wheels but if another wheel cracks I would get myself a new set of wheels

You should be able to get it replaced under good will from bmw, depends on the alloy style and age. Which ones do you have?

I was turned down with a 225 style rear it is 3 yr 3 months and covered 11k miles ,It seams they try and keep it under the 36 month factory warranty

I had one replaced late Dec as it was within the 36 months but 3 months on the other has failed/cracked and they arent interested ,I may have another go next week at another BMW Garage ,

I certainly would try another garage, stay away from same franchise as they tell each other everything.

The problem is as you say, the age. +3 years is pushing it. Unless you can prove the damage was there before warranty ran out. it's only 3 months over.

Push for it and you should get a result, maybe best you can get is a reduced cost for the replacement.

I've just had the tyre pressure warning light come on today checked tyre pressures and the rears are both at the correct 39psi, one front was at the correct 36psi and the other front was at 33psi so had dropped by 3psi compared to the other front.

I'm assuming it may be cracked so will keep an eye on pressure this weekend and I'm due to fit new tyres this weekend or next so will take a look then.

I have a similar issue. My front right tyre loses pressure much quicker than the rest. Within 2 weeks it's down from 2.6 to 2.1 vs 2.4 for the other side. I suspect cracked alloys but I have no way of finding out!

Take the wheel off lay it face down so the back of the alloy is facing up and spray soapy water between the tire and the alloy the small gap ( bead ) between the two if bubbles come out thereS a leak or a crack chances are you will see the crack if there's one there
