Switching maps/ECU "learning" with JB4
Hi guys,
I know this topic has been brought up before, but here we go... I installed the JB4 PNP last week. I've been running map 5 since installation. My only other mod is a DCI. I use 93 octane gas. I have heard that the ECU needs to "learn" or adapt to the new maps. One way to do this is to do some WOT runs in 3rd/4th gear. Well, my 7 mile commute to work doesn't allow that ![]() I know want to try map 1. Is it ok to switch now, even though I haven't really put the car through a proper learning period? If I switch back to map 5, will it again have to "relearn" map 5? Am I just over thinking the issue??? Thanks for any info -c

To quote Terry (JB4 designer):
"The JB4 is continuously learning. So, drive and enjoy. It will do its thing in the background based on the conditions its observing at that moment. You could spend a whole day doing full throttle runs but the moment it senses knock, air intake temperature changes, etc, it will change the tuning. So the notion that you need to "adaption runs" before map 5 runs properly is flawed because there is no proper way for map 5 to run. It's always going to be all over the place as things change. That is what auto learning and adaptive mapping is. Maximizing safe power output at any given moment during real world on road conditions." Put it on map 5 and enjoy. |

The 3 quick 3rd gear runs just speeds up the process for WOT applications. Without them the car will learn slower but continues to learn.
Where the 3X3 runs are important is for those of us mixing E85 & its a good plan to do it on every tank. Run Map 1 to clear the system then 3X3 on Map 5 to reset it. Good plan to also do it at the track if you buy some race fuel but not enough for a Map 7 run.
