INPA communicating, then not, then working again

I know many of us have had some problems getting both black dots when we open INPA. Maybe this will help you a bit. Maybe not.

I coded my 2012 last month. Took a while to get it all talking. I went back out today to make a couple other changes. Plugged in, turned the car on, opened INPA. No black dots. Oooops. I forgot toattach the USB at teh top option on my XP Mode. Redid everything and still no dots. Turned it all down. I checked the parameters and everything was correct. Pulled the cable out, turned everything off. Plugged back in, turned the car on, paused a minute. Turned INPA on and VOILA.

Short story, maybe give it a few shots before you kick your girlfriend's/wife's cat across the garage

Mine would say the version doesn't match or something along those lines.

I still can't get INPA to communicate...maybe I haven't restarted/turn off everything enough times lol.

I got the right cable that everyone uses too, and believe I have followed all the instructions to get it set up.

Are you using windows in virtualized mode? If so did you triple check that you attached the USB device to the virtual OS? This got me a few times? Good luck!

INPA communication should be very simple. Cars before about 2007 use K line or sometimes double K line. K line USB cables use the FTDI USB drivers and need the COM port set to COM1. Cars after 2007 use DCAN and don't need the USB drivers. Cars after 2009 may use pin 8 for Ethernet so you have to unsolder pin 8 or use an adapter. The recommended cable covers all three scenarios.

If K line is needed then the COM port settings are only visible once the cable is plugged into the PC.

Also it's best to use a 32bit OS on your coding laptop. Then you don't need to run a VM

I'm using a windows XP 32 bit laptop...
Anyone in the bay area want to help me fix my INPA communication problem? My cable is the recommended one from automotive tools. I'll get lunch!

Hmm, maybe. I'll try to find other versions to install and see if it'll work. Thanks for the tip

You need to first hook uP the cable to the car, then plug The USB into computer, then load up INPa. Then once INPA loads, turn ignition on. Follow these steps and it will always work.
