I fought a speeding ticket without a lawyer and won with the motorcycle cop there. Judge was a pro tem volunteer i believe so he was actually pretty fair listening to peoples arguments. If you dont have many priors and look fairly responsible you will get some leniency and usually the option to take traffic school if you've already gone in the last 18mos. Most important thing is to never admit guilt, and keep postponing the date as long as possible(legally). If you have a really bad driving record yea you might want a lawyer...
