Ok so i got new rims and tires put on. Few weeks ago. Felt a vibration and steering wheel would shake. Went back to shop and the rebalanced everything etc. Vibration was gone but my steering wheel still shakes at around 40-55mph. before and after that it is fine....is it my alignment somehow? or should i go back to shop for balancing again? They dont do alignment there...

Happened to me too, it was the hubcentric rings I was using, they were poorly designed and caused the wheel to not touch the rotor.

its probabaly still wheel weight issues, most techs that balance wheels dont care enough to get them perfect. Were they road force balanced?

what hubcentric rings? They were "ride matched" so im assuming road force balanced? lol not quite sure never really heard that term..

It could be:
Warped Rotors.
Out of balance / bent wheels.
Tire pressure.

In some cases worn bushings, this isn't very likely.

The wheels were road force balanced at the dealer (aftermarket wheels) and then installed with new ECS hub rings

a hub ring is for when the wheel bore is larger than the wheel hub diameter, in order for it to be centered. the problem with the ECS rings is that they were beveled on the side facing the hub, and there was about .5mm of plastic where there should have been none, so the wheel did not touch the rotor, allowing it to shift position when driving

this caused shaking behaviour from 30 to 80mph, that went and came as it pleased, and then caused the rotors to warp to hell in about 4 months

A lot of aftermarket wheels need centering rings so the wheel fits the hub properly. BMW wheels are 'hubcentric', meaning the hub is supposed to center the wheel -- not the lugs.

Are these OEM wheels or aftermarket?

If the wheels ARE centered properly, the next step would be to take them to a shop with a Hunter Road Force machine and someone who really knows how to use it's features. It's possible your new wheels just have excessive runout/road force, even though they are balanced properly.

Does your wheel shake only at 40-55? Does it do it at any other speed, or does it change in intensity as speed rises? If its only at that speed it could be problem with the servotronic assist. A sensor could be going bad.

You can still balance a wheel without Road Forcing it. Ask the place that balanced everything for you if they have that equipment.

well took it in today...apparently they never put hub rings on...wheels didnt come with them so they didnt put them on. so they ordered some and going to put them on when they come in. all for free thankfully for the multiple trips to shop. the wheels were used but not bent in any way. i ordered the wheels from the shop that is putting everything on(discount tire) ive always dealt with them and have had no problems. until now of course. anyhow hopefully this will fix the issue im having.

Well that would explain the issue you're having. Hubrings are a must if your wheels are not hubcentric!

well wheels are hubcentric they never checked....so now they're ordering new tires. hopefully this gets resolved soon...

There is nothing wrong with plastic hub rings. I've used them for years without any problems at all.

well finally got resolved...there is still a tiny bit but nothing major. they replaced and ordered all new(better tires) for free so that worked out in my favor. cause had a bunch of stuff come up when i ordered tires so had to go super cheap. and they replaced all 4 with more expensive Falken Azenis

I have used plastic too and not had a problem, but in areas with potholes, they tend to crack. I had 2 crack and replaced them all with the purple ECS rings, and the shape of the ring was not correct, causing my rotor warp problems

I have also found the metal ones can be had for just as low cost as the plastic ones, i got a set of 4 AL rings shipped to me for about $15

+1, but add "for over a decade" in my case.

Metal rings have a tenancy to corrode up here in the rust belt from time to time so I prefer plastic. For race track days, some prefer metal as they can handle more heat.

You can find metal rings for relatively cheap, but even then the plastic ones will not corrode or have problems getting stuck on the hub. I've never heard of anyone cracking their hubrings before though!

Not to mention that I've heard about hub rings just totally getting stuck to the hub because of corrosion and rust. Plastic ones slide on and off so easily.

I've heard that for autocross purposes a lot of people either run metal rings, or don't run any hubrings at all, because the plastic ones have been known to belt or deform though. Lucky for me though, my car doesn't see any track time.
