335i Remap Questions!
Hi guys,
Quick questions around remaps. I have an E92 335i SE and wondered: What the thresholds were for upping the power and the stock equipment coping? Is there an assumed safe BHP/ftlb limit? From experience with other non BMW cars, it becomes a night mare when the clutch/box can't cope etc! Is there a map/mapper of choice that I should be looking at as they are highly recommended? How much would I be expected to pay? Is it a live map or flash map process?

I'm relatively new the the BMW scene but own a 335i myself.
It seems they'll run In the region of 370bhp on standard hardware I have just purchased an accessport COBB from America which gives you a selection of maps you can upload so that if you decide to hunt for more power you can simply upload a new map when you have installed the nessesary parts eg exhaust, front mount cooler etc and also does data logging and fault diagnosing. Alternatively there is what called piggyback's again from America (jb4, procede) that you plug into the ecu and basically tricks the ecu into seeing different parameters. As for mapping in the uk I'm sure someone will come along and explain abit more. |

There are many options for mapping in the UK, there are a few threads about it. The usual suspects are Evolve, Simon at Emaps, DMS, JB4, Cobb and a few others. There are many places you can buy an of the shelf reflash but you normally get what you pay for with these things.
The power limits are about 370-380bhp and 400ft-lb for all stock hardware. Where abouts are you in the UK as that could make a difference. |

Thanks guys.
I've always been scepotical of off the shelf maps and they're not individual to the engine. Is there anywhere that does live mapping that you are aware of? Is it true that when the car goes to BMW they can often wipe the map and go back to standard?

That is true about BMW wiping the map. If they 'update' to the latest software it will rewrite the map.
Thats why I use an Evolve-R cable which allows you to load up the map on your driveway, also to reload standard for warranty work. If BMW update they will rewrite an updated tune via e-mail for you to upload. The Cobb and JB4 also have this convenience. |

Just seen you are in East Grinstead. Birds might be worth looking into as they are not massively far form you.

Engines with stock internals are pushing 900BHP without blowing up.
Safe limits (in my opinion): Software only 380-385BHP +Intercooler and Downpipes 450bhp +Meth injection 500BHP +Upgraded Stock Housing Turbos 600BHP Or Very Large Turbo Kit 900BHP (at the moment) N54 is a very tunable car. Mine is up at around 450bhp with meth, just about to change out the clutch (with 100k miles on the car though). I have a JB4 G5 ISO tune - Its awesome!

Thats interesting to know phil200tdi, is there a limit to how much "safe" power an auto box can take?

The Vishnu Single turbo Kit is running on Auto transmissions.
They are running slightly smaller turbos than the manuals due to the shift points negating the need for larger compressor wheels. I dont think the boxes are slipping though! DCTs are a different story though without modifying the internals..
