One little nail, $500 for a new tire

I have ~6,000 miles on my car. I got a nail in a runflat tire and I had to get a whole new one... my friend said they might be covered in a some warranty or something... anyone had this happen?

Consider replacing your RFT's with non-RFT's.

Of course, I love my RFT's; 5 flats in 20K miles, all covered by my 'tire insurance', bought with car, ~$500 (others have paid much, much, much less, I know, was scammed). Your local tire shops may offer this insurance service as well; ask around. It will be much cheaper than $500. You can still buy the insurance. Get several quotes for the insurance.

I HATE dealing with flats, hence the love of the RFT's. I'm a road metal magnet.

Dealership submitted claims of $380/tire x 5.

Damn! what a coincidence!! i just got a nail in my tire yesterday. i went to the dealership and they said i would need to replace my tire but they dont have any in stock. so i went to the local tire shop and they told me the same. what i ended up doing is, since i was lookin to upgrade my rims anyway - i ordered 4 non-RT tires from tire rack - drop shipped to the tire shop - and all i have to do is to wait for my rims to arrive and have them mount and balance them. ive been driving for 13000 miles n its the 1st time ive ever got a flAt... what do you do if you get a flat on non-RFTs?

Dealers won't patch a RFT. But there are independent shops out there that will patch it for a minimal cost.

It depends on if or not the sidewall is damaged.

Ok problem is you get a nail, air runs out, and since you have no spare you drive on. Sidewall is now compromised depending on surface type and length of your drive. A tire with a compromised sidewall is dangerous as its prone to blowouts. Trust me you don't want one of those. Patching it fixes the hole, but your sidewall is still compromised. If this is a front tire, imagine what happens if it completely blows out at speed. I know BMW touts their car steering geometry will compensate and save your bacon, but truth is a blowout is a blowout, you can not negate physics, the result is bad and directly proportional to your velocity. Comensate? Maybe if you are going 20 MPH it might help, realistically the effect of the speed is so big the so called compensation is negligeable. I have footage of Rally cars no less crashing after a blowout. That is with their extreme cambor that is supposed to stabilize the car, and a professional driver behind the wheel. I doubt a mere mortal like many of us would avoid crashing. if its a rear tire by all means go patch it, if its a front tire, it could mean the difference between a few hundred dollars and thousands.

Never compromise on your tires and brakes. They are 80% of your road safety.

Couldn't agree more. Well said. But, I wouldn't spend $500 on 1 tire. That's what you call reDONKulous go buy a tire at tire rack, and install it at local tire shop.

same boat

same thing happened to me. made a thread about it, but got only a couple of responses. i went to discount tire and they said they would replace two of my tires, front and rear for $800 total. i was thinking of buying new wheels instead, maybe m6 reps or csl reps and switching to plain ol' non-rft tires. it's not that much more $ than keeping rfts. check out my pics below. sorry, don't mean to threadjack. good luck with yours.

i was also quoted at $520 for 1 replace RFT. however, i took it to a friend who works at a bmw dealership and he patched it up. luckily, it was a rear tire and also the nail was in the middle of the tire, not on the side. i am looking to get non-RFT's however.

rule # 1 when you need a new run flat should be DO NOT go to the dealer

a tire shop will be much cheaper (though still not cheap)

Your sidewall is not compromised if you fix the tire before the air is all out.
On a normal tire you see it right away if it's leaking, so you do something about it. On the RFT you don't see nothing. Thats why the car has the tire pressure monitoring system. When the press. warning comes up you do something about it. Right. If you think "oh I have RFT's I can drive home and maybe next morning I go to the garage and have it fixed". By then the air is completely gone and then of course the side wall is compromised!
We always patched and pluged tires! With the RFT its the same, if you make sure to go to the tire store and have it fixed right away. If they do....
BMW says you can drive 50miles with it without air. Of course, so they can sell you an other tire for a ridiculous price, because you drove without air.
Get the picture?
