E92 320i fuel economy
Hi all
I've only had my e92 since sept 1st, and i'm wondering what other people are getting out of there 320i's. Between motorway and local, I'm getting around 37.5mpg. Given that the combined states around 44mpg, and most of my driving is on the motorway, is it that the car needs to have racked up a few 000's before it reaches it's optimum state? thanks B |

I'll be amazed if you get 44mpg - I get that from my 320D - although if I baby it, I can get 48mpg (mainly motorway)
37.5 seems pretty good to me, is that at legal speeds?

I used to get 44~45 out of the old E46 320D (book = 49.6mpg combined). Best economy I've saw was on the way to UK1 (60.1mpg), but that was babying it a bit and sticking to the motorway and the speedlimit. Only on a long sustained run like that would I beat the official figure.
You may do most of your driving on the motorway, but it doesn't take too much sitting in traffic to put a serious dent in the figures. Do you have, and are you using the start-stop function? As an aside the 330d is now giving 37mpg (but the figure is climbing slowly)

Hi
I have had my E93 320i M Sport since 1st June and am getting 30.0 mpg over 2800mls of mainly country driving. Mine is an Auto, but the published figures are much the same as the manual. My old 2003 manual E46 320ci convertible with a 2.2L 6 cyl also did about 30mpg over 25,000 mls of similar driving - That was much the same as its published figure, so I was expecting the new one to do over 40mpg. I am very pleased with the new car, but I find the engine sounds like a diesel at tickover, the power delivery is not as good at around 2000rpm as the old 6cyl, but the auto box is excellent and more than makes up for that. Like you, I was hoping the mpg would improve with miles, but I can't see it getting anywhere near 40mpg. I think BMW have tweaked the cars to give good published figures which are not attainable in real life driving, the only benefit is we pay lower road tax. Alan |

You'll never get near the 44.8 combined figure IMO. I've had 4 BMWs over the last few years and I have typically averaged about 10-20% less than the quoted figure (40/40/20% mix of country/Mway/town driving).
My E92 320i is at around 35mpg average at the moment, with upto 39 on a long Mway journey (at the legal limit-ish....). I've done 1500 miles so far. I reckon it wil level at about 37 or so overall when fully freed up. The engine really loosened up at 1000 miles, and is much more eager (but you've gotta rev it!) but economy hasn't gone up by the same amount really yet. Changing up when the gear change indicator says to does wonders for economy but you make glacial progress..... I use the stop-start function: wierd but don't know how much of a difference it actually makes, I also keep the climate/air con on all the time. |

Most of the official fiqures are produced under ideal conditions, Which includes temperature and humidity, the air con will certainley be switched off and the tyres probably inflated to around 60PSI.
Real world average is what it's all about though, filling up with x amount after y miles. Currently the 335d is getting about 33 and the 120d about 47 to the gallon. Regards Chris

I managed 40mpg on a 200 mile journey in my 335d, sat in cruise on a quiet motorway at about 80mph (indicated). I reckon that I can get about 550 miles to a tank of derv at that rate - assuming motorway driving all the time. If it gets even better as the engine loosens up I will be very happy. Around town its a different story with the OBC indicating 22 mpg over the first 40 miles

Carlos, it has done just over 500 miles, she is currently under cover at home in the garage. I have given it a little bit of stick. On the M6 the other day I was followed then overtaken by a lovely 54 plate red E46 320i vert. I let him overtake me, followed him a for few miles then I put the hammer down just to show him what the 335d could do! Very childish I know but I couldnt resist it!
I am amazed that I sit at 80 and the engine is only turning over at 2000 rpm! Haven't quite got used to the paddles yet, there is just so much to 'play' with! |

I have the e92 320d auto and haven't managed to dip below 45mpg yet (best is 57mpg). This is with a mixture of town and motorway driving. I think the auto helps with the economy to be honest. My previous car was an Audi TT 225 and I used to get 33mpg whether I thrashed it or drove it like an old lady!

32.8 mpg for mine so far, all B road / town driving. 700 miles on her now, so assume it will get better once i put a few more on. Interested to see what a m.way run will bring back.
Any other 2.0i owners find it stutters a bit at low revs??

Hmm
I managed to beat my official figure for the first time in ages. Between Bristol and Lampeter (South Wales). All motorway driving was a constant 75/80 and sometimes 50 where there was roadworks. Managed to stick to the limits in rural south wales on the way. But got chased up the rear from a scooby who kept pushing but was too chicken to pass. So I hammered it with constant gear changing upto the M4 then took it steady again all the way home. Managed to get 33.5 mpg official figure is 31.7 combined.

And congrats to you too Bump
![]() Will keep an eye on the stuttering too, like i say only does it from low revs in 1st/2nd. Don't want to pull out on a r/about and it bog down, a bit dangerous.

impressive
![]() one careful owner springs to mind ![]() didnt think the 320d was capable of that? thought for instance a 330d could be more economical due to more power to carry the weight.? i dont care for MPG figures, more like MPH figures haha ![]()
