Not sure about the remote diagnostics, but the drill bit test is how they gauge the wear on the flapper. Mine failed and I have new turbos now because of it.

BTW, I see in your photo you have the grill strips. LOL I did mine about a year ago just like that. Looks good.

NO CODE required, just need to take your car in and complain about the rattle and also include the fact you're going through a Qt of oil every 1200 to 1500 miles helps. Before they could actually test the WG, they got approval to adjust them.

The thing to remember here is that you have CPO, which WILL cover the actuator replacement if that's what's needed. The actuator replacement and adjustment procedure only applies to earlier N54 cars (built up to 9/07), though. Later cars already have the updated actuator design, and any rattle concerns would require measuring the wastegates for mechanical wear.

For guys with pre-9/07 cars (and no CPO) that just have a rattle concern, the dealership may want to remove the turbos to replace the actuators and measure the wastegate wear. If no excessive wear is found in the actual wastegate mechanism, you would likely be responsible for the actuator replacement costs.

Keep in mind, the 82k mile extended warranty is an "emissions warranty". The ones I've replaced under this warranty were due to actual binding and low-boost faults. BMW is still watching these repairs and giving the dealerships a hard time with claim reimbursement at times if everything is not in perfect order. Makes it risky for dealerships to do these repairs without a proper failure and related fault codes.

Just my experience....

Good information. Always nice to have input from the other side of the coin.

Just went to dealership. They said it was the actuators, even though they "were some of the loudest they've ever heard". So. Fuck.

I have an 07 335i w/ 45k on it. Last month I finally took it in (after months of contemplating) with SuperSprint mufflers on it (all other mods removed) and two days three days later I had my car back w/ NEW turbos! Out of pocket cost = $0. They even gave me a new C-class as a loaner!

Another great thing about getting your turbo's replaced is getting the coolant flushed for FREE!

I have the rattle also and was wondering if it causes any negative performance issues; I don't have any codes that I know of.....
