Crankshaft Rear Seal R/R **DIY ??????? **Help
I have a leak from the crankshaft rear seal. Its a slow leak but i want to get it on the lift asap. Does anyone know where i can find a DIY or even the location in the TIS? I have a at home copy and im still looking through it) Also if i had the BMW technical terms it would make it easier to search. I also want to do my oil pan gasket (DIY's already avail), and the guibo.
Any suggestions of anything else that i can do while im this deep? Much appreciated!!!

Considering a leaky rear main seal or an oil pan gasket will collect oil at the same location, I suggest you address the oil pan gasket first since it's the easier of the two. You need to drop the transmission to access the rear main seal.
Sorry I couldn't help with any procedures. |

Im thinking trans should come off just to get everything done at the same time. Anyone know if there is a SA from BMW? Also anything to be said about oil additives to swell up the seal?

So you don't mention what type of transmission the car has. If it is a manual and depending on the mileage I'd replace the clutch and related components (slave cylinder, etc.).
I've not yet pulled the tranny on my car, but I've done a few other BMWs in the past. There's really no magic to it. I've done all the below except pulling the trans. Basically its: remove the exhaust remove the under panels remove the drive shaft Remove the transmission Replace the seal The oil pan seems a PIA if you don't drop the front subframe. If you are using a lift, I'd vote for dropping the subframe to get the proper clearance to work. If you are digging this far into the car, I'd suggest buying the Bentley service manual; it's a good reference for what you are doing and keeping the car in the future. The TIS is a nice resource, but it is written for factory trained techs so there's not a lot of detail. Attached is the Guibo/driveshaft replacement TIS procedure. |
