Flood damaged cars
I want to know what you guys think about buying a flood damaged car from NY? I recently had the opportunity to buy a deeply discounted 3-series but passed on it. Good deal or stay away?

Unless you are getting it for free, plus you have a warranty that will not exclude flood related issues, I wouldn't touch a car like that.

Don't... I can't even imagine the number of potential issues that could derive from flood damage

Not a chance. There's been a ton of articles lately to avoid flood damaged cars from the storms that happened in the U.S. Atleast they listed it as flood damaged...the nightmare would be flood damaged cars being passed off as good condition cars. There are an insane list of potential problems, the least of which is the corrosive properties of salt in the water.

The only thing ( things ) good on it are the body panels.
Fenders, plastic covers. Anything and everything with unprotected ( painted ) surface is absolutely unusable PERIOD it may look good on the outside, but really it is just a piece of %$#@^ no matter what the sellers says. |

From what I understand, you cannot import/register a salvage / rebuilt title car into Canada. That includes flood damaged. You can however buy it for parts.

Never. Just imagine getting water damage on your cellphone, it's the same thing but now on a large scale that could possibly even put your life in danger. Sensors for the airbags corroded causing your MRS systems to malfunction. Electrical issues that could potentially cause a fire-hazard. The list goes on, of course it may not happen but I'm giving extreme cases.

You can bring it to Canada for parts only once you cross the border, you will get the irreparable title for the car, but the funny thing is even though you will not be able to register it as a drive-able vehicle you will still have to pay air-conditioning tax Ha ! ( $100 )

In Ontario, all other "salvage" branded cars can be imported and have to go through a structural inspection test at a licensed inspection center. RIV allows one year for you to get a salvage car road worthy. http://www.mto.gov.on.ca/english/dan...g/faq.shtml#a2 Quote:
