dealer says Vaccum lines leaking

I dropped off the car to check for turbo rattle, it was throwing codes at high RPM with WG rattle pretty obvious when you lift the foot off, dealer just called and said he wont be able to do further diagnosis until vaccum lines are repaired, he quoted $550 but I talked him down to $450 - I think this is still high, do you know if this is something I can DiY ? (they're the front passenger side two black bulbs that lines are running to)

Do a search, we've coverd this topic before. Just buy upgraded silicone vaccum lines online, and go to a local shop to get the job done. At $450, you'd be overpaying by $350.

Mine had the same thing, it was only 1 of the two lines. They are all in a loop so if ones leaking air is being lost out of the other as well. I tested with a gauge. Pull a hose of 1 of them and place a gauge on it, should pull down to 20, if it does replace hose and try other canister. If it doesn't do this you found your problem. I replaced mine with generic silicone hose, fixed it right up. I used 3.5mm ID hose as well. Cost was 10 bucks. For a bandaide after I found the one that was bad, I teed off the top of the working one to the wastegate solenoids till the hose came in. Worked just fine till I was able to replace the bad hose.

Shouldn't cost that much. Vacuum line is like 5 dollars, you can DIY easily. This is an hour of shop labor max.

How many Vaccum lines are there ? I know of 4:

two behind the oil filter
two on the passenger side connecting to black "bulbs"

any more ?

I called the dealer to let me pick up the car fix the vaccum lines and I drop it off tomorrow to check turbos, and he goes u still pay $140 for diagnosis ... WTF I brought the car in to check for turbo thats a recall on them, he's having his manager call me

he also said I cant guarantee the lines were fixed coz I dont know how work was done yeah right

Bulbs are the boost canisters. There are some under the engine cover too.

Also lines going to the wastegates.

I'm fine with $140 but the diagnosis isn't complete, if I put in vaccum lines and there's still an issue I pay $140 again ?

It sounds like you are getting the run around.

How can they charge you a diagnostic fee and not diagnose the problem. That is a bit unfair. I've been in the industry before working at dealers and I would never do that to a customer.

As it is their original quote of $550 is out this world. I'm all for business making their money, but only what is fair and reasonable.

Take it too a reputable shop or a different BMW dealer if its warranty/recall work as you say.

Weird, I've been there only for recall (battery cable) and wheel alignment, but they have been pretty good to me. Although BMW dealer or not I cannot justify 110$+ for a cabin filter, which cost around 30$ and 5 min diy.

As for Patrick BMW their service is ok (done only auto trans flush on E46 330Ci), but their body shop is not the place you ever want to go.

Update: I bought the threaded lines x 2 meters from Laurel bmw ($34) and spent 5 hrs, changed all those out - I found two leaking pretty bad, most of the time was spent connecting to the front turbo, its a *itch to get to ... I did notice oil going into the intake via vaccum lines right by the big charge pipe, would it harm if I blocked that vaccum line ? (Its a T, running from above chargepipe out to two intakes) I'll post pics later today

The car runs like a monster, never ran like that before, also my oil temp gauge doesn't go near 250 anymore, it had started to hit that mark lately not sure what was the correlation

Don't block any Vac Lines.

The oil is normal blow by.

If you want to reduce the blow by get a BMS Oil Catch Can.

The reason your oil dosen't get as hot is cause you are not leaking boost. When you leak boost your turbo's need to work harder to reach target which creates more heat. More heat, less power, less efficiency.
This would also make your intercooler and intake air temps hotter reducing power output even further.

$450 is a bend over without the courtesy of a reach around price. That is why its ESSENTIAL to find a good mechanic or shop after you're out of warranty.....with any car.

Labor at the most should be $150. Hoses should run u....what $10??

Nicely described -

My intercooler would have oil deposit also in that case (blowby going into turbo intakes going to intercooler) .. It was quite a bit of oil, not just vapours
