Damaged ignition coils
So my 335i had been misfiring in cylinders various cylinders. I pulled the coil pack to check them and heres what I found:
Confused as to why there was little springs just laying in the tube... Not having ever looked at a coil before I didn't realize where it belonged I put it back together best I could and the misfire and RPM fluctuations got worst. With time not on my hands I took it into an indie shop: After $400 later they discovered 3 coils with broken tips letting the sparks arc through the sides causing the misfires/SEC light/fluctuating RPM's. |

Not only are they relatively inexpensive, but you can notice the change in the car power right after you change them, and a reduction in consumption. My problem with coils always was that I didn't notice much change until the second coil went bad. That's when the misfires became obvious. And my car is a 4-cyl. I guess you guys with 6-cyl engines probably don't notice a bad coil until 3 of them burn So my solution was to change them every other year. Problem solved. At $50 each, you get to save a lot more in gas with the improved efficiency new coils give you. |

Anyone else recommending to change all the coils over time? I got a misfire last week due to a failing coil. I just replaced the defective coil. Would it be a good idea to change the remaining 5 coils? Or waste of money?

I don't know if I'd go so far as to say a waste of money, but if there isn't an issue with the coil, then there will be no direct benefit. From a preventative standpoint it's not a bad idea, but it's not a great one really either. If you are planning to do plugs though, and have a 6-7 year old car with a bunch of miles, you may want to get a couple in case you break yours pulling them out anyway though.

I got my coilpacks from these guys at a very reasonable cost:

I ordered 6 coils from autohausaz for about $40 each and will install this weekend. I have over 85k miles on my car and am still on the original coils. I hope they solve my misfires I have been experiencing that do not leave any codes.
