Yeah but now you can take your time rather than do it in 24 hours

Believe me there are far worse MOT testers around. I took my 206 diesel in for MOT a couple of months ago into a place near where I work. The guy was an arse and because the airbag light was on put on the advisory sheet 'car has been in an accident' despite the fault being with the slip ring and the car was HPI clear with no signs of accident damage. He also commented how the car was a nail and I should scrap it. About £120 later and new drop links, one brake hose, two top mount bearings, slip ring and some WD40 on the brake compensator it passed fine.

yeah, I suppose. I'll keep them in my phone book once I pop down there and check the place out

What are your concerns? That more is wrong with your car than just the tyres?

The free retest only works with the same MOT station and for certain items.

You can't leave there and get another station to observe the tyres are now legal.

You'll end up having to pay for two MOTs.

Why the hell did you let your women take your car for an MOT?

If you aren't happy just collect the car and pay the man his fee. I'm sure he'll think twice about doing it again.

So essentially as i see it, he has illegally passed the car knowing there is a serious fault on it. Isn't it MOT procedure to fail the car regardless and/or inform the customer during the test about concerns? (they hand you that orange outlined failed document)

He is technically holding my car for ransom in a way. I haven't gotten all the details yet so I don't know if he is expecting me to buy the tyres from him.
And I'm concerned about the quality of his work with regards to him removing and replacing parts.

If he has really digitally passed the car can it be cancelled officially or is it done now for the year?

Can I have a new one re issued from a place I trust? Or will my place just have to go through the MOT motions to make sure everything is alright without actually recertifying it.

EOD, I know have to buy new tyres but my issue is with the garages procedure.
Reading this thread I don't think your issue should be with the Garage but with your Girlfriend for taking your Car for an MOT without your knowledge.

1) Clearly explained that I didn't have faith in the ability of the garage.

2) Fully aware of that. Was just correcting @idnan about 'cost of retest'

3) At no point did I say or imply that that was my plan.

4) Fully aware of that. I want the car handled by someone I feel is reputable.
Ever got a car back from some place and later found a broken component that they never declared because they thought you wouldn't notice it?

5) Seriously?

... always good to share ..... when her own car is an R8!

6) "he'll think twice doing it again" whether you're referring to him doing me a favour or breaking some sort of law is besides the point when my original question was about cancelling it. Which was answered a few posts back.

It's not the garage's fault.

They've been asked to MOT a car and they've done what they've been asked whilst trying to do you a favour.

Does it matter who does your MOT? The next person or garage to buy it will hardly bother.

Why does it matter that your girlfriend drives an R8? I don't understand the relevance?

As far as I can see she has taken your car to a garage without your consent and it has clearly upset you.

Obviously she can't be trusted.

The fact that the car was driven with illegal tyres, maybe a bit rich complaining about the garages ability to look after a car.

Why don't you calm down. I made a joke to dilute your somewhat sexist question. You've obviously found something you want to dig at and it clearly shows no amount of appeasing with you is going to change that. Everyone else here was quite helpful.

Incidentally, you CAN just get it re-tested and that test will void any previous ones. You could get two MOTs a day for the next ten years and the only valid one would be he most recent.

Remember tho, if you take it for another test and it fails, you've then got a failure showing up on the test history. That fail will also completely invalidate your previous (albeit hooky) pass.

To the OP
The car must have been driven for some time with dangerous tyres prior to trip to the garage for the MOT. I think you should check your vehicle more often for your own safety.

You didn't want your girlfriend to take your car for an MOT. Rather odd that she took it for an MOT with no prompting but if you have a quarrel it's with her and not the garage. If you don't want to MOT the car by this garage then have it failed and drive home with dangerous and illegal tyres.

By the way does it have insurance? This would probably be invalidated by the illegal tyres.

Hi, I'm getting it retested today. Just like you said, it will replace the one from the other day. At least now I have more confidence in the people handling the car.

Duly noted. I was aware that one of the front ones needed changing soon but the rest seemed fine. Got told today the tracking was off and there was 'abnormal wear'.

Can't have it failed when he has already passed it digitally.
Seems like a lot of people missed the point of the thread. Try forgetting the girlfriend and the garage for a second... I asked a couple questions to understand what my options were. In future I will hold back on the back story and just ask direct questions. Should make for simple entertaining reading!

Nooo, keep the back stories. Its allways fun watching people go off topic and then watch the OP continuously try (to no avail usually) and point out that was not the point of the thread.

Why don't you just replace the tyres and get the certificate from the guy?

It seems he was wrongly trying to do you a favour without getting himself deep in trouble. He should have just failed you.
