I recently performed the charcoal delete on my intake for my 2006 330i and noticed that I am getting about 2 mpg less overall for 4 or 5 fill ups now. Not sure why this is happening because I would think I would be getting better mpg since the engine can breathe a bit better now and not have to work so hard to get air. I have also decided to keep the stock air filter rather than try k&n but that should not make a difference. Also, I have the BMW PE.
Does anyone have any clues? Dirty MAF sensor? Need to reset adaptations? I feel that the car is driving better than ever. Like it revs freely now. That being said I don't feel like I'm driving the car any harder than before. ![]() |

maybe it does make the engine breath better but then dme had to add more fuel to balance out the af ratio?

I personally don't know why folks insist on taking this out. Are you that desperate in trying to squeeze out 0.2hp? Accept the car/motor for what it is and enjoy it. I'm not against modding, but certain mods just don't seem worth it. And for those who "swear" by it, show me a dyno with baseline or how many tenths it shaved off your 1/4 mile.

I don't think anyone is doing it with claims of gaining any real power. If they are...fail.

You could probably get the same improve in throttle response by just improving your filter more frequently lol.

Definitely don't feel like it was a waste to me, and I'm a skeptic too. and OP, I would check the connection on the back of your airbox. Your mpg's shouldn't have gone down.

All good, I never bothered just because I've seen bulletins from BMW stating removing the filter may have adverse effects on driveability. Different motor (s54) but you get the idea:

Alrighty, I went out and disassembled the intake and reassembled it making sure the connections are tight. There is one area of concern which was mentioned in this thread and that is the connection at the back of the airbox. I can see how someone could believe that the connection is fully seated by looking at the top of the intake but not realize that the bottom of the connection is not completely flush with the box. That could have been my problem. What does suck though is my car does not have that free revving feeling anymore. It feels like it used to which is not bad but just not as fun.
![]() Anyways, it is too early to find out if I got my mpgs back but I'll post back again if this didn't fix the problem.. |

I did this mod several weeks ago since I had to open the airbox anyways. I know there's no significant HP gains but did notice better throttle response and my mpg improved by almost 2 mpg (mixed city/hwy). Again this was my personal experience in San Diego, maybe results differ based on factors related to location?

That is not possible. Removing the charcoal filter has a negligible effect on the vehicles performance. There is no way you would see a MPG decrease because of it. More likely, you are pushing the car a bit harder now.

removed it 1-2 months ago (already had the k&n drop-in filter), noticed an improvement on engine response, it just felt like it reved easier when pushing accelerator pedal 1/4, maybe it was super dirty (didn't notice). Obviously didn't notice any performance gains when full throttle.
no change in mpg though. |

I did not. Like I said in my second post it's going to take awhile to determine if I got my mpg back. In the meantime I'm waiting on a K&N I ordered so I may clean the MAF then.
