front wheel bearing going bad.
When I turn left at high speeds my car makes this noise that sounds like its coming from the tires. After a few searches and youtube videos of cars driving on bad wheel bearings im convinced it is infact my wheel bearings that need replacement. Now I just spent 1500 on fixing the water pump, blew another grand on new tires and ive had to replace my bumper recently too. I dont want to blow lots of money on this so im wondering how much would it cost to get the dealership to replace them for me. Also is it a easy diy if I decide to go down that road? If so where would be a good place to order my parts.

I replaced both my front bearings a few months ago...easy. I bought the replacement bearings online for about $80 ea and it took me about 1hr each side to replace them (RWD only).

Front wheel bearings on a BMW (RWD) are pretty easy.
I've done it on a couple of cars (E36 and E30). You will need a big socket and more importantly the stock wheel or at least a wheel with the stock bore to get the socket through. You want to both torque and remove the bearing with a wheel on the ground so you don't put excessive stress on the suspension when trying to tighten or remove the nut that holds the bearing. Other than that it's not much worse than changing rotors. Actually if you have changed rotors you have done 80% of the job. |
