Help in selection on spacers on lowered xi

Hey guys, first off I wasn't sure I should put this in suspension or wheels and tires section, so sorry if it's in the wrong place.

ok, so down to business. I recently lowered my E92 335xi on some H&R sport springs to get a little better ride height. But now it just kinda looks like the wheels are sunken in to the wheel wells and so I decided it's time for spacers. So dont ask me why, but for some reason, i've never been able to wrap my head around wheel offsets, and which tires and stuff that I have to run to avoid rubbing and so forth. So that is where I decided I needed the collective knoledge of the forum to help me out.

So here is all the info that I would imagine is nessecary to help me decide on which size spacers I can run so I dont start rubbing.

Car: E92 335xi
Wheels: Style 199 19" factory wheels 8" in front, 9" in the rear
Tire size: 255/40/19 in front and 255/35/19 in the rear
Ride Height: H&R sport springs, so 1.5 lower than stock in the front and 1.3 in the rear.

I think that is all that someone should need to figure it out.... I feel like a complete idiot asking this. I can rip appart and rebuild and engine but for some reason my mind is too lazy to really fully understand this haha. Anyways, thanks in advanced for your guy's help!

Pre or post LCI? Looks like the 199 offsets are 39mm in the rear and 37 in the front. Pre-LCI can get away with a 20mm (actually 25mm could maybe work) spacer in the rear and 15mm (18mm will likely work as well) spacer in the front. LCI will be about the same up front but the rear spacers will have to be about 5mm thinner.

Check out my post about wheel and tire sizing.

http://www.e90post.com/forums/showpo...87&postcount=3

A side note... Those tire specs are way off. 255/40/19 is a HUGE tire. Way too tall for for the car. Since you have an xi the diameter between the front and rear wheels has to be about the same (within 1%). A 255/40/19 and 255/35/19 are very different in overall height.

Typically our customers would run a 235/35/19 and 265/30/19, so you can kind of compare sizing.

Great thanks for the info! Do you think with what VMR said below that, those specs might have to be different with the tire size that i'm running?

Thanks I will deffinitly check out that post. Thats really interesting that they are so off. cause I was told by the dealer I bought it from (BMW of Murray, my local BMW dealer here in utah) that they were put on by them 2 months before I bought it. Thats amazing to me that they would screw that up so much. Do you think that'll be doing harm to my trans/diff/transfer case?

Also since I'm running a 40 in the front and a 35 in the rear, wouldn't that be the same difference as running a 35 in the front and a 30 in the rear? just cause it's a difference of 5? Like I said, I'm a certified dummy when it comes to tires sizing and such. But yeah...

ahhhh I'm a dummy. I just read that post you told me to read. I always thought that both numbers were a mm measurment. I didn't realize the second number was a percentage of the first... great... so i'm way off...

Definitely do not run the square width, staggered profiles on your car, since you have an xi. That's just going to wreak havoc on your drivetrain.

At least you have a better idea about wheel and tire specs now though!

So my understanding is that the best overall way to set up my car would be a non staggered set up. with the same size tires all around?

You can run either staggered or square on your car, as long as the tire sizing is correct. Square wheel and tire fitment ensures that you won't have any problems.

ok so I have been crunching numbers... tell me if you think this makes sense. When looking at your comment saying it needs to be within 1%. This is what I found.

My currtent tire setup (255/40 and 255/35)
FRONTS

255 / 25.4 = 10.03 tire width
255 * 0.40 = 102 aspect ratio
10.03 * 0.40 = 4.01
REARS
255 / 25.4 = 10.03 tire width
255 * 0.35 = 89.25 Aspect ratio
10.03 * 0.35 = 3.51

4.01 + 3.51 / 2 = 3.76 Average
4.01 - 3.51 = 0.5 difference
0.5 / 3.51 * 100% = 0.14

So the Difference between my front and rear tires currently is 0.14%

and here is the size that you recommended to me.

Proper tire size (235/35 and 265/30)
FRONTS

235/25.4 = 9.25 width
235*0.35 = 82.25 aspect ratio
9.25 * 0.35 = 3.23
REARS
265/25.4 = 10.43
265 * 0.30 = 79.5
10.43 * 0.30 = 3.129

3.23 - 3.12 = 0.11
3.17 average
0.11 / 3.17 *100% = 0.03

So the difference between front and rear is 0.03%. obviously a lot closer.

So when you say it needs to be within 1%, do you mean 1.0% or 0.1%?

And it's weird cause Discount Tire recommends a (225/35 and 255/30) size, which leaves me with a 0.29% difference. which is even worse than mine...

Does this make sense or did I do something wrong? haha

soooooooooooo quick update. I feel retarded.... actually. I guess i'm just a little blind but yeah... While I was under my car this weekend, I got a quick look at the inner sidewall of my front tire and realized something. I THOUGHT it was a 255/40........ well it's 225/40 haha so yeah. this whole post was pointless. turns out that my tires are within 0.008 difference between each other. so yeah. I'm good. thanks for the help anyways though gents. soooo yeah.... i'm gonna try some 20 and 15mm spacers! thanks again
