4 series vs 3 series
Just a question that's been on my mind
As we all know the new "4 series" will be the coupe or cabriolet version of the 3 series Does this mean the owners of E92's and E93's will see a lesser depreciation as there cars were the final shape of the E9X models which were classed as 3 series ? I own a E93 2012 and was just wondering |

2 sides to that coin
Heads: The 3 Series E92 and E93 have not been superseded with a later model
Tails: They've been obsoleted In reality, I doubt a simple name is going to make any difference to the dynamics of depreciation....same way I doubt that anyone's going to buy a 4 Series who wouldn't have bought the same model if it had been left as a 3 Series. |

Nice logic but sadly flawed. As a superseded model there will be an increase in depreciation, more so for newer models of the last shape. All models still will take a hit.

Thank you guys for replies
It's been on my mind for a few days you see ... I'm thinking of getting rid of her soon but don't know when's the best time to do so I don't get bummed on extreme depreciation |

Maybe not so straight forward as you may think. I can see quite a few E92/3 owners not moving to the 4 series. I certainly won't. I drive a E92 330D LCI. It's reasonably quick and very frugal; over two years of ownership it's averaging just over 45 mpg measured brim-to-brim.
There's no 430D, no 425D, and no 435D, just the 4-cylinder 420D. I don't fancy 30 mpg from the 430i, and guess there will be others of a similar mind. So I'll probably keep it a while longer than intended, then swap marques. If other 6-cylinder diesel owners follow suite, ie hang on to their current vehicle, and given you can't buy a new one, then there will be a shortage. Usually restricted supply lowers depreciation. Only time will tell. |

I mean surely there's not a majority of people wouldn't just pay £40k+ for a car and would rather wait 3 years after they come of lease to purchase them ? I don't know but my guy feeling says that our 3 series will generally see a lower depreciation rate as they are the last coupe / cabriolets and the other reason being the 4 series is a bit too expensive just to upgrade from a 3er as of yet Even that presenter Chris Harris says the 4 series is lacking something Only time will tell hey |

Yes agreed on the larger engines to follow. When the 3 series F30 came out there was no 325d, 330d or 335d for a while. Just hang on for a bit….. be aware that the 335d will probably be like the F30 and have xdrive.
There seems to be a lot of mixed reactions to the xdrive models (eg weight, lack of M Sport suspension so adaptive suspension is a must, higher ride height). But...a diesel that accelerates to 60 as quick as the current M3 and prob do over 40 mpg has to be worth a look at. |
