Yes, how many miles since your last oil change?

It's accurate as long as the sensor is functioning properly...

Mine just popped up yesterday as well. I added one quart of oil and my car apologized for calling me a loser, thanked me, and said it's now full.

It seems I usually have to add 1 quart between 7500 mile OCI's.

^ Try 0-40 Mobil 1 or true 0-30 Castrol from Germany. From what I searched the 5-30 BMW oil is good, but it's not a true full syn like these 2. Wally world now carries 0-40 M1 which is LL-01 approved, MB approved, Porche Approved etc for $23/5qt jug. Can't beat it. I've run the German castrol in my 5'er and it's a nice running oil. I run one of those. Currently on M1 in both Bimmers with MANN Oil filters.

And the million dollar question... do you have any oil leaks? Oil filter housing leak maybe? my '03 530i with 126k on it barely does 1/2 Qts in 7,500 mile OCI. Now that I got all the leaks fixed. My 335i does 0 qts yearly which is only like 3k miles.

Bought the car in January. Mechanic said it was good and vehicle stays said full. I've gone probably roughly 7500 miles since purchase. Was thinking I should just schedule an oil change rather than adding some. I haven't looked into a DIY

DIY is simple but not very cost effective (that is, oil cost is already getting you high, at which point having somebody else getting dirty instead of you for $10 extra makes sense).

Look for oil leaks at the usual spots (top of engine, front of engine close to the oil filter, engine pan). It is not crazy amount of lost oil, but it is somewhat suspect.

Uh, not at all true (to your first paragraph). 5 qt of Mobil 1 0w40 = $23. OEM filter from online retailer (includes new plug washer and o-ring): $12, give or take. That's $35. I'll give you my left nut if you can find a shop that will do SYNTHETIC for that price. And, it takes about 20 minutes. The closes I've found is a shop that, for $20, will take my supplied filter and oil and change it for me (long story), which is much better than the dealer's $100-plus ripoff.

Don't go to the dealer..... You can have it done for $75 at an indep. And I think you need 6qt total (don't remember exactly, but a single jug was not enough last time I did it), so you'll have to add another bottle of 0w40 at ~$7-8, or another full jug (which makes more sense overall for top-offs). So, yes, it is more costly to have it done, but not much so, and time is not free either.

I'd like to know where you get your Mobil 1 oil for $4.60 a qt... I can't find it for less than $8 a qt.

And FYI, it takes about 6.5qt, not 5qts like you mentioned.

Please tell me where you get your mobile 1 0w40 full synthetic for $4.60 a quart.

It's usually about $7 a quart where I'm at... Another thing is our cars take 7 quarts of oil... not 5....

For this one reason, I've just been getting the OEM BMW oil for $7 a quart. Oil changes for me is a little under $60 DIY.

As for the oil filter, get the $8-$9 MANN replacements. I compared it to the OEM one and aside from the BMW markings, it's pretty much the same with the same little crush washer and rubber seals.

Oh and to the OP - My car has always been using a quart of oil from new at about 8k miles. I use it as a cue to change my oil which about halfway through the 15k bmw recommended changes.

Alright. Sounds like I'm heading Over to autozone to purchase some Techron (for a good cleaning) and Mobil 1 0w40 (ll-01 approved) oil and drop a qt in.

Ill look for my dealership oil change coupon ( if I can find it haha) or go to the Chevrolet dealership I purchased it from... They give me 1 yr free inspections and oil changes but not sure WTF that gets me in my non-American vehicle. Ill have to call and just ask. I thin they have a BMW guy there

Wal Mart. All 5 qt jugs are $23, including 0w40. Probably a pricing oversight on Mobil/Wal Mart's part, but I'll take it!

I just did an oil change and bought the same jug at Advance for over $40...

Yup! My Wal-Mart has it intermittently, so I stock up every time they do. I think I have 4 5-qt jugs right now.

I do a M1 and Mann filter change for about $36 DIY. Done correctly. Where do I get that done somewhere?
