faulty oil sensor? HELP!
Ok here is the deal. When i first got my car in 06 1 week later my oil light came on. It said it was below minimum and said if i continue driving it may cause damage to my engine. So i added a 1 quart and a half of oil then everything was fine. To me it never warned me that the oil was getting low plus this was juss 1 week in buying my car. Recently my oil lights been going on and off saying it's below minimum, so i turn on and off my car and the oil is at max again! What is going on. My service info says 8000 mile in oct/2008
Can anyone explain whats going on with my car. Recently i've been noticing that my car has been losing power as well. Could this be my oil? |

As for the oil - I guess it's normal that our cars burn some oil and we need to add it from time to time. I added quart and half at 5,500 miles. People have been adding oil at different mileages. Losing power? might be failing fuel pump too.

I had the same problem, once.
I added 1/2 quart and suddenly it was full... took it to the dealer the next day and they said they 'recalibrated' the oil sensor and it was fine now. I challenged them a little as to how they know that there is indeed enough oil in there - they said their computer told them there was- I said doesn't your computer talk to the computer in the car, well yes it does they said, then I said isn't that the same computer that last night told me there was no oil??? And when I suggested the only way to know for sure would be to drain the oil and see how much comes out they said 'uh well that would be an oil change and its not covered under warranty'. So I said ok, I did my part, if the engine blows for lack of oil its on you. That was about 2 months ago and all has been fine since. |

Do you make frequent short trips? If so there is a common problem with condensation building up on oil level sensor that causes abnormal readings. to get rid of this try to drive your car on the highway for about 10 minutes or hold the idle to about 4000 rpm for 6 to 8 minutes then allow car to idle normally for a few minutes (5 or less) then shut off car and open oil cap and let water vapor come out of cap for 3 minutes. this process - though annoying - will make your oil level sensor start reading normally again.

You should be able to see levels inbetween min and max. if you cant try what i said above. most likely your oil level sensor is contaminated with condensation sending false readings.
