Org BMW cable from center console as well. USB and AUX plug. USB for chargin and controls. AUX for sound.
So what I did was:
1) Transfer 1 or more songs to the iPod with iTunes.
2) Plug in the BMW cable before you start the car.
3) When the car is running, connect your iPod to the BMW cable.
4) Start Music app on the iPod, see if the steering wheel buttons are working. Now... exit Music app and start Spotify. Play a song and see if you can skip songs etc.
It worked for me... maybe I was lucky! ![Wink](images/smilies/wink.gif)

After doing some testing, turns out that if you remove all songs from itunes, the car will no longer display Spotify songs on iDrive nor can you use the steering wheel buttons. Spotify was working fine for me until I removed all iTunes songs from my phone and I couldn't see it on my iDrive anymore. I then added an album back onto iTunes and Spotify worked fine as before again. I'm guessing iDrive needs to recognize a music player (iTunes) with songs available to let you have control. Anyways, I know this is old but just wanted to let ppl in case anyone ever ran into this issue
