Part 2 of my July 4th holiday road trip series. From Napa to the Coast!
So the day after my adventure over the sierras, I decided to head the opposite direction, and headed out northwest to the coast, via Napa and Sonoma wine country, through Mendocino county and a redwood forest toward my turn around point at Ft. Bragg on the ocean. The scenery is pure California, with good food along the way to boot!

Yes that is where the water is named for. A random winery stop along the way… ![]() 20130705-IMG_8153 by lennycarl08, on Flickr ![]() 20130705-IMG_8090 by lennycarl08, on Flickr ![]() 20130705-IMG_8096 by lennycarl08, on Flickr It was a very nice day, far cooler than the previous week had been. ![]() 20130705-IMG_8148 by lennycarl08, on Flickr Sonoma is far less trafficked than Napa ![]() 20130705-IMG_8133 by lennycarl08, on Flickr ![]() 20130705-IMG_8126 by lennycarl08, on Flickr ![]() 20130705-IMG_8127 by lennycarl08, on Flickr After a brief stint up Hwy 101, 128 contineus west through Booneville, which has a very nice brewery if you are in the area. Really it is a beach town that was formerly a large port and logging operation. ![]() 20130705-IMG_8221 by lennycarl08, on Flickr ![]() 20130705-AQ4E9156 by lennycarl08, on Flickr ![]() 20130705-AQ4E9155 by lennycarl08, on Flickr Just as we were leaving to head back to 101 and home, a young fawn chased its mother across the road. Deer at the beach! Not a bad day out sight seeing. ![]() 20130705-AQ4E9275 by lennycarl08, on Flickr The return highway was pretty cool too, but we were hungry and traffic was a bit thick, so I didn't take any pictures and concentrated on driving and getting back over the hill to make dinner at a good place I knew in Ukiah. I wish I could spend more time just driving around the state and taking pictures, but alas, there are bills to be paid! ![]() 20130705-AQ4E9231 by lennycarl08, on Flickr I hope I am not overdoing here. I just love this car and it holds a ton of camera gear to boot! ![]() |

![]() On that particular trip, I had three different cameras with me. Most were shot with either a Canon 5D2 or 1D4, but a couple were taken with my little Fuji X100. There is no particular trick to making them crisp, most of my shots on the road are taken in Aperture priority mode, ISO 400 or below. For the car pics, I like to keep it aperture at f5.6 or below usually, to try to make the car pop out a bit. For landscapes, maybe f8 or so. I also tend to use -1/3 ec to make sure I don't blow out any highlights. All are shot in RAW format, so there is more room to tweak them in post (I use Lightroom). I have since acquired a Sony NEX-6 which is turning out to be a great little camera, that I am very impressed with. You can see the results of that camera from my Mount Lassen trip here : http://e84.xbimmers.com/forums/showthread.php?t=873243 |
