From what I've read, aftermarket lights are not ideal because they tend to have a lot of light scatter, which could be a problem at MOT time.

To do the job properly you will also need self leveling & washers

If you change the whole headlight assembly I think you're good.
From what I've read, light scatter issues can occur if you install HID kit in your existing halogen assembly.

Quick summary

Pre Lci to Lci Halogens = v. easy to do, cost effective (~£250) you get the angel eyes and better overall quality of light.
Pre Lci to Lci Xenon = difficult and costly! Can be done... but you need a lot of parts

HID Kits = BAD - if they are being going into halogen lights you will not get a lot of love on this forum... these are the kits that dazzle oncoming drivers.

Depos - Not used them, but have read mixed reviews. Angel eyes are smaller, don't give you the brightest of daylight rings and have been known to fog up. The v2s are meant to be better but can be difficult to find in the uk. They are also about the same price as the LCI halogens second hand...

I went the route of the 2nd hand halogen LCI lights and they suit my needs.

I have lci halogens now but want brighter angels (bulbs have been upgraded already) and I would also like to have the hid look, I realise they are pants in halogen headlights but what are they like in projectors? Mot won't be an issue as I will simply change the bulbs when the time comes around

I ran hid's in my oem halogen projectors on my previous car (z4). Never had complaints about dazzling anyone. Obviously not legal and will
fail an mot though as that set up lacks auto-height adjust (but at least had the headlamp wash).

I did mine for light performance, not looks, although it did look oem. The z4 headlights were really shite but I find the e90 pre-LCI fine with updated bulbs only.

I just attempted to do the Prelci Zenon to LCI zenon conversion. and its seems quite easy. ( the wring part that is) . I took a chance and bought 2 LCI zenon headlights with the LED indicators and Side markers. i have managed to get them to work by tracing the wires in the headlight and just matching them up to the ones in the car. i have successfully got everything to work .Only thing is im not sure if the headlight will fit into the pre-lci front . But im gonna attempt to strip the font end this weekend and try .

If i come right ill send u some pics and more info on the wiring.

sorry for late post i just joined the forum this is my first post. hope its still relevant.

There are hid kits, but I believe going oem is best, because the oem ballast is great. Paired with some Osram CBI bulbs and Umnitza V4s, perfection.

Pre-lci and lci headlights are the same size and shape. I have done a lci xenon conversion on a pre-lci car. It's not that hard. You just need to swap a pin or two in the headlight plug and do some coding for the shutter and led side markers.

Also did some custom work on the headlights themselves. Here's a link!
