I am quoting from the workshop manual Link in post #13 page 2224. There is nothing relating to emergency operation in the owners manual.

Why cant you get into the boot?
There is a lock on the boot. Just slide the key out of the key(if that makes sense) and open it manually.

Edit.. just noticed the roof is in the boot. Oops

Looks like you have to unlock the mechanism at the bottom of the C pillars. access to these are under the rear window side panels once the top half is removed. This is where one of the special tools are shown 54 0 161 but it looks like it pushes the piston from the latched position releasing the rear deck allowing manual movement of the boot lid to its hinged position. I am only picking this up from reading the workshop manual post #13.

I didnt have bmw's special tool. So I found this in the garage

Pistons opened up

And here's the roof

I have undone the Allen key bolt On the motor and the roof feels free. Just need to wait for another pair of hands so I dont bend the roof when lifting

Was it just the case of pushing the piston till the lock disengaged and was it only on the one side ?

Looking at your photos again I can see it was both sides, interested in the unlock technique though.

G-10, I think I would only move the piled 3 sections out of the boot and then concentrate on getting the battery supply working, reading a little more of the emergency procedure of unfolding all 3 sections doesn't look as easy as man handling the roof sections into place.

Well the roof is up. It was far from finished at that point. Anyone who's handy with a spanner should be able to do it but if your unsure take it to a dealer and pay the £500 odd pounds as if you get in too deep and lose your bottle I'm sure a dealer would charge more. I did not have any of the bmw special tools just used what i had in the garage. I will up date what I did tomorrow I'm knackered today.

It was both sides. I just used the hook end of the hammer and pulled it up and towards the back of the car. Once it unlocked it moves freely. Getting it back in was a bit harder, wrapped a tie wrap round it and pulled it with a screw driver.

Yes that's what I was Planning on doing but the tonnau cover would not go back down fully for some reason so I had to completely lower the roof. Unfolding the roof was ok but it's VERY heavy need Three strong people. Had to undo a few bolts to get it out the boot

On the plus side when I bought the car I had no idea what the mileage was. Fixed the blow off lead and I had power so checked. It's a 2009 car and it's done 33,000 miles. Happy days

Did you replace thr blow off or just bypass? Good to see the roof sorted and I also thought that improvisation of tools would do the job. Interseting thread keep us posted with your progress. 33k for 2009 not bad.

I removed the blow off cable from the car, opened it up and reconnected the exploded parts. I will need to replace at some point.
