what to do for winter?
i have a 3 series with style 162 wheels
and winter is coming is it alright to just put winter tires on the 162's? or should i buy a set of winter wheels? but where should I get it from? i don't want to spend to much $$$ should be 17" alloys i guess. input / suggestions / comments ?? |

Get dedicated rims. Mounting and unmounting tires annually will ruin the bead and you will not be able to get a good seal after a few mounts.
Personally, I would not use the 162's as they are a staggered setup. I'd go with something that uses the same width of rim and tire for fronts and rears. You can then do full tire rotations. |

the car is leased though
so anything i buy for it won't be useful if i return the car and i bought the wheel and tire insurance package, so wouldn't the bead problem be covered? and if i do buy a set, how much $$$ would i end up spending? and also, i didn't quite understand why i shouldn't put winters on a staggered setup. please explain? |

You can always sell them off used, here on on eBay, when you return your car and get some money back. If you don't use dedicate winter wheels you have to spend around a hundred bucks twice a year to do the switchover, that could have pay for the cost of one wheel each year.
For winter tires you want to go narrower all around in order to get better traction in snow. But in a staggered setup the wider tires - the ones that give you the least traction on snow - go to the back where you need traction the most. This is counter productive. Also that less traction in the rear actually increases your chance of losing the rear end and spinning out, so that is one more negative. You should get 4 dedicated wheels with winter tires. I bought a set, mounted and balanced, from Tireack recently and it cost me $1,917.29 including shipping, duty and taxes. I am planning to install them myself. http://www.e90post.com/forums/showpo...4&postcount=28
