Winter tires and wax on a new lease 328i
new to this forum, just got my 328i this week. Just wondering about winter tires....the dealer has a steel rim winter tire package for $1700, in which they can sell sell the rims and tires on consignment for me after the lease is up. Has anyone ever done this or is this charge too high. Would you simply recommend tirerack then? I have the non-sports package with the all-seasons - would they be good for a winter or are winters a must here in Ottawa?
with re: waxing, when is too soon to wax and what type of wax do you recommend. |

i'm probably not the one to ask since i'm learning all this stuff for the first time. you must have the style 157 rims. i personally am going to use my 17" alloy rims during the winter and buy winter tires for about $1000. i'll use the all season runflats that the car comes with for next summer, and buy an aftermarket set of summer rims at that point.
your steel rim package is a good price i suppose, but do you really want to drive around in steel rims? most i've seen are god ugly. but if they look decent, then go ahead. why would it be too soon to wax? i think as soon as you get the car you should be washing and waxing. the type of wax i am getting is Rain Dance Carnauba Wax. Ordered it on amazon since it's cheap and recommended by some pple on this site. |

You should be able to buy a decent set of winter tires and replica rims that don't look like crap for the same price, or a few hundred bucks less. Steels are fugly, whether you put bmw centre caps on or not. You can sell your winter set when your lease is up just as easy as BMW stealership. Don't expect them to get you top dollar for used steelies anyway. Look on craigslist. As winter approaches, there are lots of used winter sets appearing.

$1700 is way too much for steels. I recommend visiting the wheels/tires forum. After the lease is up, the steel rims will be rusted and not worth anything.
As for waxing, visit the detailing section. There is tons of information there.

+1. ........and that is $1,700 plus taxes! I got Dunlop M3's mounted and balanced on Rial alloys (made in Germany) from TireRack for $1,917.29 including shipping, duty and taxes, and that was just before Canadian $ broke thru the $1.00 USD mark.
You need winter tires if you live anywhere that temporature drops below freezing in the winter. Summer tires start to turn into hockey pucks at temperature below 7C. Four seasons tires do not fare much better. In some European countries it is actually the law to use winter tires for certain months in the winter. If your new car is delivered within one of those months it will be delivered with winter tires instead of summers.
