Well, here is an update.... I was driving around today, and the engine light went off. I did pull the intake out yesterday and reinstalled it. I made sure the MAF was sealed well and everything was tight. After driving about 20 miles this morning it went off. The only advice I can give to those who are having this issue is just to give it time. If you still experience issues, you may need to pull it out and reinstall it to make sure everything is sealed properly.

I can definitely say that this does make a performance difference. It seems to get better as time passes. The big difference is during kick down. It seems to give a much harder initial pull, and it pulls smoother throughout the RPMs instead of dropping power at the higher end. I also have air scoops.

Gas mileage has also gone up about a mile, and I have been driving it harder since I installed it.

Cool! And we all driver harder with this intake just so we hear the sound!

I still haven't seen the improvement on my MPG since it's not my DD at the moment.

Its def the MAF sensor. Try cleaning it off with some MAF sensor cleaner from CRC and see if it goes away, even if its for a bit.

This way you can confirm that it is indeed the sensor. This is more likely since you have the oiled filter

I've actually cleaned the sensor about three times over the past week.

I know! The fun part is WOT while driving under a bridge or tunnel.

This a great way to fuck up your oxygen sensor. I had a AFE CAI too a while back and was getting the "engine running rich bank (x)" code from time to time. I have the bav tool and a ODBII reader so I kept deleting the code but it kept on coming back from time to time. I went ahead and cleaned the MAF (even though it was fine), reinstalled the CAI, and made sure that the seal for the MAF was in tight. The code would still come up here and there but it wasn't too bad. Well this went on for a few months, when I got the code again and scanned it with the ODBII this time it was basically telling me that my oxygen sensor took a hit. I didn't think that could be right so I scanned with the BAV tool and low and behold the o2 sensor took a shit. At the time my car was still under warranty so I took it back to the dealer (put stock air box in) and they replaced the sensor. Engine running rich means that car is not getting enough air; lean means that the car is getting too much air. Both scenarios are not good for the car. The perfect air to fuel ratio is 14.7 grams of air per 1 gram of fuel (14.7:1 ); the sensors will do their best to keep that ratio but if it's way thrown off than you will get codes that you are getting.

Are you saying this intake is a good way to screw the o2 sensor? I'm not sure I understand what your concern is.

My engine light is off now, so I don't think I have anything to worry about. I also have to think that AFE is a reputable intake manufacturer, so I don't think they would have an item on the market that is could potentially harm my engine. I'm not saying the possibility never exists, but this isn't an Autozone intake.

I also talked with my BMW dealer service tech, and he didn't seem too concerned about it. He said to just wait and see if it goes off, and if it doesn't to come in and they would take a look at what the issue is.

Just speaking from personal experience. Can't say for 100% that it was the intake but it's a strange coincidence that my O2 went around the same time I started getting these error codes, which where caused by the CAI.

How many miles did you have one the car at the time?

Wow, that seems rather early. Hopefully I don't run into issues. I'm hoping the mixture was just slightly off and the car has readjusted now. It feels good.

Sorry that was a typo it was around 35k. At first the CAI ran ok but after a few months I started getting the SES light. I did everything I could think of with the CAI (reinstall, check seal, clan MAF even though it was looking like new) but the codes would randomly come back.. Sometimes I would be good for a few weeks but when I finally got the code about the O2, I put the CAI to rest.

Well if you want peace of mind, I installed mine at 29xxx miles, I'm now a couple 100 over 30k and still now issues. It'll be interesting once I use it as a DD again.

I'm having the same problem. SES light is on after I opened my box up. How do I reset it?

I don't know how to reset the SES light without going to the dealer. Actually, after I had the light come on on three separate occasions, I was getting ready to put the stock airbox back in when I decided to remove my air scoops and see if that changed anything. I've been driving without the air scoops now for several thousand miles and the light hasn't come on yet. Could have just been a coincidence.... maybe not.
